And secondly, how can you ask the parents of a murdered lad, who subsequently found out that the police were racist and bungled the investigation, and apparently now one of the coppers was bribed to 'let it rest'. If it was a member of your family, wouldn't you do all you could to get justice?

I'm not sure how you can say they're cashing in - they'll never get their son back.
The problme is that the media tend to atr everything with the racism brush - the detective alleged to have taken bribes is alleged to have been taking them for years - not necessarily racist but very corrupt. I believe one of the phrases used last night was that he was "institutionally racist" - this makes no senese becasue instituational racism refers to policies and procedures of an organisation, not the individuals. In fact teh original report tried to make the differentiation between individual racism and instituational racism but it got badly reported. I guess "Police are racist" is a better headline than "Police Service is Institutionally racist in it's policies and procedures".
At least Imran Khan has admitted that he and the legal team also let the family down when thay advised prosecuting despite advice from the CPS that there wasn't a realistsic prospect of conviction at the the time.

I'm not sure what evidence there is of corruption, a fellow detective says his colleague received money from a drug dealer who is one of the alleged killers fathers. The detective alleging this has served time for corruption himself and it seems to be his word against the other.
Most of the evidence to discredit the alleged killers alibies appears to be 'I thought I saw', only one person on a bus appears to be certain he saw them out on the streets that night, besides the lad with Lawrence at the time of his death. A junior lawyer would demolish this evidence in court.
There is just a chance that Lawrence wasn't murdered by these lads but the trial by media has never looked into this possibility. Unlikely as it seems to be.
Unfortunately as in many more murders there is no evidence that will stand up in court but these murders are not 'solved' by the media and do not seem to have the publicity machine the Lawrences have.

I'm agree with sandbach99 on this....
Up front I'll tell you of my personal associations. I went to School with the accused men, I doubt they would recognise me now but I did at one time know them personally. I also lived in the area at the time.
Whats happening now is nothing short of a witch hunt. Don't get me wrong if they did it then they need to be brought to justice but the is no evidence that they were involved in the murder at all.
The evidence in the original case was that they liked knives and were in a gang. Nothing more than that.
The only new evidence is that somebody possibly saw somebody who might have been them in the street and an ex-policeman who was convicted of corruption has alleged another police man involved in the case was also bent. Other than that the whole thing hangs on the fact the somebody can't remember the exact details of what he did on a Tuesday afternoon 11 years ago. That's it no physical evidence at all.
There is no knife, no blood in fact not a single shread of physicall evidence against these men.
The private prosecution failed and so would a criminal one.
Should the family get justice, of course, but justice certainly isn't a conviciton based on the fact that somebody on a bus saw somebody on a street corner.

I particuarly knew the Acourt brothers, (there are in fact three twins Scott and Jamie and their brother Neil) one was in my class at school so saw him and his brothers on a daily basis for 6 years and I can honestly say they were perfectly normal nice people. I also knew Gary Dobson and again he certainly wasn't a thug.
They certainly were not the class bullies or people that got in to trouble, there were far worse people than that at my school.
I'm not necessarily defending them and I certainly don't know one way or the other if they were or were not involved.
My main interest in the case is this idea that they must be brought to justice when in fact they have and the were proved 'innocent' (in legal terms).

wowo: the reason there was no blood or a single shred of evidence is because the police did'nt arrest them until 2 weeks after the murder, thus giving them plenty of time to dispose of any incriminating evidence. They are the scum of the earth and I hope they get whats coming to them, as you know, what goes around comes around!!!
I have to say the fact that your Dad is a drug dealer and may have in fact paid some bent copper to keep your name out of the frame, still does not mean that you are anything to do with the crime, you may be innocent and your family may just have no faith in the police bothering to get the right people.
That being said bernie ,your question is so ill phrased as to be offensive. Nothing will ever bring their child back and in a situation where you have lost a loved one to violence nothing can ever make up for it, not even bringing thier killers to justice, although as a family surely not giving up on that prospect is the least you could, or would want to do?

Having lived about a mile away from where he was stabbed you have to ask the question why did he get off at well hall station(eltham) when he lived nowhere near there, the view of the local people then when it happened all agreed it was drug related,if you got off at that stop on the train i would guess 95%people who got off lived there. There is nothing to do there unless you are living there or visiting someone there. Im not in anyway condoning what happened to poor stephen it was terrible we all know who did it? so lets hope this time justice will prevail.
on the note i left this morning about cashing in i meant that after the death of stephen they were given everything they wanted taxi cabs at their beckon 24hrs a day because they were scared to go out,two police offices patroling the spot where he was stabbed for over 2 years, and cc tv cameras up in the trees because people were defacing the area where he died.did you also know that on the exact day a young white boy was also murdered in the same area you never heard a thing about that .

THIS IS A LIE
Show me just one link to a (credible) news story about it and I will apologise profusely, but as far as I know, this was a myth put about by the BNP, believed and repeated by ignorant people who wish to reiterate their bigoted views without the intelligence to confirm what they are told!
Even this disgusting site: http://www.seanbryson.com/articles/stephen_law rence.html Which is probably the most racist site I have seen, doesn't mention any other stabbings on the same day, let alone the same area.

A colleague at work was discovered to be a very senior member of the BNP. He was perfectly nice at work, including to non-whites. It was only outside the office that he was seen to be a raving lunatic.
Isn't that always the denouement to all mass murders? He was a perfectly nice normal person said those closest to him....
.....the bloodstains were a bit of a worry though
Wowo, inside info is always helpful, and I am not belittling your contribution at all. However, character witnesses have limited impact.

Bernie the things you listed cannot in any sense be taken as "cashing in". Given the high profile of the case and the likliehood it was a race crime all those supposed examples of "cashing in" are completely understandable. The term "cashing in" suggests people taking advantage of circumstances and opportunistically living it up. You're suggesting that's something bereaved parents would do?!
I'm all for balanced viewpoints and fair trials but your comments are skewing towards unpleasant territory.

Perhaps i look and see things differently to others having read all your answers, still if we all agreed all of the time life would be boring .I meant no malice at all i hope they get the scum who did it, but i still say the lawrences made the most what they could over the sad death of their son, moneywise.
This is yet another example of the institutionaly left wing BBC falling over itself to exploit the most infamous so called racist murder ever. This was only done so all the liberals involved with making it can display their contempt and loathing for the police and pander to this country's obsession with racism. Thanks to the pathetic MaCpherson report afterwards that has effectively neutered the police for the fear of being labelled rascist We are now reaping the rewards in the shape of the scum who terrorise decent people without fear of any consequences. The Lawrence case is now being dragged out and re-examined to the same degree as Princess Diana, bad things happen, deal with it.
