What is it with the Daily Mail?
Please enlighten me. I don't read any newspaper be it free, tabloid or broadsheet. I'm even impressed that I know those terms of description.
From time to time I see people on here mentioning things like 'oh you're a daily mail reader' or 'typical daily mail' I get the impression that the Daily Mail offers an unpopular view of Britain today.
Does it print unsubstantiated articles or is it just printing news that maybe isnt considered 'mainstream' ? I read in an earlier thread that the Daily Mail was intent on stirring up racial hatred. Is this the case or is it just reporting on stories that most people would like to see 'brushed under the carpet' ?

I have two problems with it. The words & the pictures.
No, I dislike it's way of pandering to the knee-jerk prejudices of Middle England. It's so small-minded and smug with it.
It's the Sun for people who think they're too clever to read The Sun. Although that's probably unfair to The Sun.

For example, owner Lord Rothemere wrote to Hitler in June 1939 saying, "My Dear F�hrer, I have watched with understanding and interest the progress of your great and superhuman work in regenerating your country." That's not to suggest that the current owners are neo-Nazis, you understand, but it's another nail in its coffin.

All of the papers in the UK (and probably elsewhere in the globe) have a political agenda, and any story is "spun" to fit the prejudice of the owner. This is particularly evident in the tabloids, the Express and the Daily Mail. The bias is less obvious in the broadsheets, but is still present. IMO the most objective impartial reporting is probably the Independent.
Daily Mirror = Traditionally Left Wing
The Sun = Traditionally Right Wing till Blair came along
Express and Daily Mail = Middle Class Right Wing Little Englander
The TImes, Sunday Times in particular = Right of centre
The Guardian, Observer = Left of Centre

I lean WAY over to the left, but I read the Daily Mail (we get it free at work) every day, because I like having my point of view challenged.
It makes me angry every time I read it, but by reading views opposite to my own, it gives me a chance to analyze why I hold my views and see into the mindset of people who lean to the right.
...I'd never actually buy the paper though, because for me, it's a little bit evil.

The Daily Mail is to the left wingers what The Guardian is to the right wingers.
LazyGun got the discription about right but if The Mail is for little Englanders then The Guardian is for the pc / liberal / hand wringing / facist lefties of the world.

Ditto what the old git said, if The Daily Moan attracts the exact opposite of the In A Pickles of the world, then it is the paper for me.
Truth of the matter is the paper is slightly pernicious, and from what I can tell everything will give you cancer and/or any other disease of the week at some point, but the fact remains that it is by far the best selling 'quality' tabloid and therefore Middle England (why do some people say that as though it is an insult?) is a force to be reckoned with - this is despite the scorn poured on Middle England by the Toynbee's and her ilk of the world.

Actually LONNIE the Sun is the most widely read daily tabloid - with a circulation of 3.2 Million compared to the Daily Mail's (almost) 2.4 Million. For those interested - The Guardian has a circulation of 370,000 !!!
The News of the World has a circulation of almost 3.5 Million comapreed to the Mail on Sunday's 2.2 Million.
