As far as I can tell, they have a professional duty to offer fire safety advice to all and everyone, but I can see why they may feel uncomfortable going on a gay pride march. If they refused to deal with *anyone* gay in *any* circumstances - even someone who just popped in to ask about fire alarms or whatever - then fair enough to be criticised for it, but it seems a bit unfair in this case.
As In A Pickle says above though, the Bishop taking it upon himself to get involved does neither the firemen or the church any favours.

I don't believe they had to March, just hand out leaflets AT a March about, Fire Prevention which is part of their job, so yeah they should have done it and were bigoted and stupid to have refused. It's now been whipped up into a big storm because they were in the wrong, realised it and are basically stuffed, so they obviously thought they'd create a "political correctness gone mad" scenario and make it look as if they were victimised. I have absolutely zero sympathy for them as they are clearly homophobic and trying to make a big deal and wheedle out of their bad behaviour by implying that people might have thought they were gay. What a whole firestation full of firemen? Yeah well that's likely isn't it? Absurd.
