Tomorrow (Sept 8th) I'm forty years old...is there ANYHTING good with turning forty, or is all that 'life begins at forty' nonsense, really a load of rubbish.

I post this here because frankly, me turning forty is pretty big news in my house.

All those posters who consider me a limp-wristed lefty liberal - do your worst...I welcome it.

Turning forty didn't bother me at the time BUT without appearing to be too negative now in my mid forties I do feel I am getting older. Not just the grey hair , thread veinsand wrink;les but I definitely don't have the energy I once did. I have also just taken delivery of my first pair of specs!
I just feel for the first time in my life I am geetting old.
Enjoy the attention for a day then get on with your life. You are only as old as you feel. I'm in my fifties but still approach everything in the same way as 20 years ago.

Happy Birthday!
I've no idea what being turning is like, but if it's anything like turning 30, it'll be accompanied by the rather nice feeling that nothing much has changed and it's just a number.

Happy birthday for tomorrow - hope you have a good one!
Well Sp many happy returns, they say life begins at 40 and I suppose you should by then have quite a high income compared to outgoings, Ie the mortgage should be almost gone etc so you should be able to have a decent car , regular hols etc but I suppose these days very few people are debt free at 40 so maybe it's just another birthday. It is also worth noting that a lot of people start life as damp eyed liberal lefty's and slowly as the reality of life dawns they slowly turn into Tories! So if you are starting to think that the Tories are talking sense or you find yourself going for blue things, welcome on board!
I think the expression 'life begins at forty' relates to married couples who have had kids in their early 20s and are looking fwd to them leaving home and being less of a nuisance. I've done things the hard way and left it to 36 to become a father - I'm 40 in 2 years time and will be way into my 60s when this happens.

Anyway, happy birthday for tomorrow sp - my sister is 40 this October and not relishing the thought. You're not alone!
Did you post this on News because you knew the rest of the liberal brigade are always on here and you wanted a lefty love in?
Give me your address and i'll get you a subscription to the Guardian for your b'day pressie. Or what about a CND badge?
Many happy returns.
I can't even remember 40, but I'm still going strong (erm, well, strongish, the bits that haven't fallen off) and have moved further to the left. Happy birthday!
Does absolutely everything revolve around money and status symbols with you Loosehead?

Happy Birthday SP

I warn you 40 is OK what comes as a shock is the first time you do a survey and have to check the 41-50 box instead of the 31-40 one!

If anybody (like me ;c) ) points out that you're now closer to 60 than 20 ignore them!

Still I'm a lot fitter in my forties than I ever was in my thirties.

Make a mid life resolution - do a parachute jump or take up rock climbing - even if it's competetive tiddly winks.

Screw the Tory siren voices do you want your last words to be

"I'm so glad I paid off the mortgage!"

Carpe Diem!
Mazeltv sp1814, enjoy yourself, have a good time, and don't forget, your only as old as the person you feel, thats why I married a woman younger than myself.
Happy birthday sp, you'll be happy to know that I am still behaving disgracefully at 46 and don't feel a day over 20.

Well Sp I've never had the pleasure of being in a thread with you before, But happy birthday, I'm 43 this year, All valid points made above, however the most amusing 40+ thing I have found is that it starts to get easier & quicker to gesticulate or even describe what word you are trying to say, than get your brain to go through the whole host of knowledge & experience that is in there, to think of the actual word! Have a Good one! It's good, really.
Sorry...all valid apart from looseheads! I'm debt free with a decent house, not a regular holiday, and no car! But people love me and my walking & pimp my ride shopping trolley!
40 is a great time to give something up. Pick something in your life that you should not be doing and give it up. I gave up smoking and cut down on my drinking.
Happy Birthday. I'm quite looking forward to 40 (currently 35) as each year into my 30s I've felt better, fitter and happier than the previous year. At this rate, by 40, I'll feel twice as good as I did at 20 :o) However, as a woman, enjoying the much talked about mid 30s sexual peak, I'm at a bit of an advantage over you I guess, as you guys have no such high spot to look forward to in advancing years.
Plus only 2 years to go till you can have a mega party - to celebrate being 21 again lol
Have a great day anyway.. xx

Thank you ALL for your posts....much appreciated

However, I hadn't even contemplated that whole 'filling in the 41-50 box on forms'. Eeek.

I look forward to a day of doing very little work and lots of present unwrapping.

Now...back to Blair...
