Does anyone know which post offices are going to be closed?

Yes. I expected that there might be a list available somewhere online. I had a look but couldn't find anything. I wondered if anyone else knew more than I did. Hence posting this question. Hence the purpose of this site.

I doubt that any specific announcements, regarding individual post offices, will be made until after the end of the consultation period regarding possible replacement facilities in some areas. The deadline for consultation submissions is 08/03/07:

I don't think there is an actual list published yet but to close down any at all is far too many in my opinion. They ( who ever the heck "they" are - and it certainly isn't the majority of the overwhealming great british public) have also shut down and boarded up a load of cop shops 'round our way! Get shut of Post Offices and Cop Shops , there, that's a good idea, just what we need eh? Just what kind of agenda do these people have and what other wonderful ideas are they going to amaze us with next? Puzzled, of Tunbridge Wells.

I work in an area where there's not much in the way of amenities. There was a petition, which, from what I can gather, everyone who lives and works in the area signed to prevent the closure of the local post office on which we all rely. Including the ex-council landlords in the area who I work for, so you�d think there would be some sway there wouldn�t you? When I asked the staff if they knew what was going to happen, they still had no news and sort of laughingly acknowledged that they�d be the last to find out.

For the benefit of dyli795, I will define "they".

THEY (The Hardline liberal Education academY) are a crack team whose members have trained for years to become experts in what right-wingers call "liberal do-gooding". To be a member of THEY you must first have experience in Politics, Equal Opportunities Campaigning, Health and Safety Procedure, and Anti-Daily Mail Sentiment, among other courses. Although I don't agree with all of their policies, it is for the latter mentioned course that I might consider applying.

Much of THEY are members of government think tank Demos, although THEY predates Demos by several years.

The primary objective of THEY is to aggravate the Daily Mail and Express over trivial matters. Once enough individuals are angered over the ease by which Muslims are allowed to flick V signs at a judge in court without punishment, THEY will strike, the Glorious Revolution will occur and a New Order will be established in this country. It's mainly for this reason that I might apply.

Like the Illuminati, THEY occasionally gets media attention, although unlike the Illuminati, THEY doesn't make pretentious claims about its own power.

The vast majority of these post offices are running at a loss and are only kept going because of subsidy from the government - ( i .e taxpayers )

Which other company / business would this be allowed to continue ?

We the public have to decide do we want the post office to be run purely as a commercial business or do we want it to perform some social function as well , and pay for the privilege

Pensioners were forced to have their pensions paid into a bank account, often against their wishes.
Same applies to child benefit and other state benefits, this stopped one source of information regarding false claims, a local post person knew all the local "gossip" about who was with whom or doing odd jobs etc.

TV licences have to be purchased by Direct Debit and now car tax discs can be bought on the net. Stamps at the supermarket.

Why do we need a Post Office? to work out how much the postage is in case its' too fat or large .

According to an item on the BBC Action network website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/A308557 1) dated 2006 November 2, it should be possible to download a list of all POs that are under public consultation for closure from the PO website (http://www.postoffice.co.uk/portal/po /content2?catId=9300070&mediaId=load103007).

However, I have today tried to access this information several times using three different browsers and in all cases the URL reverts back to the portal home page
(http://www.postoffice.co.uk/portal/po/home); nor does searching the PO site for "public consultation" or "closure" lead to any likely links.

Seems somebody may be scared the plebs might start revolting...so much for open government!
