If you do the officer training as the Prince and thousands of others have then when you graduate you are a 2nd Leutenant, simple!

Actually, Prince William was beaten to the 'Sword of Honour' prize by my friend Angela, who's the daughter of a teaching assistant and a printer who attended her local comprehensive school. Being brought up in a priviledged background doesn't get you everything. (And before you start to question whether this is tokenism, she's an outstanding athlete and an engineering graduate from Cambridge University).

I would like to answer Kwickie and say that in WW2 any aircrew member had opportunities to better themselves. My background was working class, my father was a stevedore in nearby docks and not having much finance to support the family. Nevertheless, by showing a good character and a traditional sense of honesty and good endeavour both he and I earned our commissions. Whether this applies nowadays, and I hope it does, I do not know.
