Every time I switch on my pc on screen news always comments about the hanging and on news and in papers. Our goverment even saying how barbaric it was .What about the things he did to the poor people.I say they should have given him to the people to hang him in public but of course that would be barbaric.

I'm tired of hearing about Saddam too, the man got what he deserved.
Since we, the West, have taken the moral highground by invading Iraq to remove this "cruel Dictator", and tried and hanged him for 'crimes against humanity', then it is our duty to treat the accused and carry out sentence in a humane and dignified manner - irrespective of the actions carried out by the accused.

If we were to publicly torture, lynch and string him up from the nearest tree, (just some of the milder suggestions posted on this site), then how would that sit against our claims to be the bringers of Freedom, democracy and humanity to Iraq?

Saddam believed those who were tortured and executed for plotting against him got what they deserved too.

Gordon Brown has just called the execution deplorable and unacceptable, so it is just a short step to the canonisation of Saddam (council house held in reserve)

Why did I know someone would come back and give me a lecture on this.Yes you probably right but why get it rammed down out throats that our goverment are so sorry for what happened at the end. They should just say WELL RID.And concentrate on looking after our own people.
Yes wendilla, but it is hard to escape the conclusion that it is all TONY BLAIR's fault, as is everything else, even the price of tomato juice in Tesco. And the price of our comfortable Western armchairs (made in China of course).
or of course, you could just say "nothing to do with me" and turn on celebrity big brother.

If you are interested in News (assumption based on posting in News), then things like this are relevant and open for debate.

Of course, if this sort of things bore you, then there are plenty of other choices.
I have said this once on another post but I simply feel that the sneaky recording of Saddam's hanging was awful because it showed the insults he received and how he was treated in his final moments. Nobody deserved that treatment, especially when the hangman and aids were his sworn enemies. To take a person to the scaffold with silence and only the words of a cleric heard is one thing, but to video a hanging, take flash photographs and hear insults shouted at him is quite another and that is what made it barbaric and disgusting. I am no Saddam lover and he was executed in accordance to the laws of his land, but to have his enemies execute him was deplorable and the only person to conduct themselves with dignity in the final moments was Saddam. I fear he will win a war in his death that he never achieved in his lifetime because the last moments leading to his death will have a psychological impact on many.

What I am trying to get at is why our goverment is saying o poor saddam what an end for him.yes I do like to read the news but not to hear our goverment being sorry for him as how his life was ended.
I think you're missing the point Wendilla - nobody's saying "poor Saddam"

The point is there was an attempt in trying him in court and carrying out the sentence to make everything look legal and propper like the Neurenberg trials.

Instead the trial was often made into a farce - it never enterred into the embaressing support Sadam enjoyed from many western countries whilst he was murdering his own people and the chanting and heckling during the execution undermined the air of legal authority that it was meant to have.

This is why so many Western politicians are angry it's because the trial was meant to portray a mass murderer on trial and instead sunni muslims in Iraq will look at the execution and see a shi'te lynch mob.

It'll make peace in Iraq that much harder
Firstly, our government have expressed that they wish to see capital punishment eradicated.

Secondly, they are not saying that it was wrong, but the manner in which the execution was conducted was wrong.

I personally do agree with capital punishment in certain circumstance however, that does not mean I would ever support a public hanging or people using their mobiles to video the death.

You state in your initial question "...but of course that would be barbaric." - and that is exactly what number 10 are saying.

10 Downing Street (i.e Tony BLAIR) has now added to the condemnation of the manner of the execution. Well that's all settled now then.

It is hard to see how putting a noose around someone's neck and dropping them 7ft can ever be elegant. A couple of the judicial hangings at Nuremberg were botched, e.g. Julius Streicher, and possibly deliberately. Who knows ? But I am sure we are all relieved that Tony BLAIR has at last spoken up. Saddam will be feeling loads better now.

I rest my case. This topic could go on forever.I just know how I feel about those who say they are upset about what happened at the end.
What would anyone expect a hanging in the middle east to be like? Are any of you really surprised to find a mobile phone recording of his death on Youtube? I am not and I am just your average person, so surely it's not that incredible. As far as hangings go, it was fast and immediate, it could have been a lot, lot worse. I don't know why all the fuss.
Well, so now Gordon Brown has pontificated over Saddam Hussein's execution !! Wow, what the heck. I thought Tony Blair had had the last word. Bring Saddam back and do it again, properly this time.

It's quite simple. It is Iraq, an Arab state, a sectarian state, a multi-factional Islamic state, this is the way they do things. In Iran they hoist teenagers up gently from cranes, it makes the choking strangulation kinder. Saddam's neck breaking was probably a matter of luck (?) given the placing of the noose.

Albert Pierrepoint once had a man dead at the end of a rope within 7 SECONDS of entering the condemned cell. And he said "It'll be ok lad".

Good old Britain, hey-ho.
The issue of what happens elsewhere (Iran), or happened previously (under Saddam) is irrelevant.

The point is, the execution should have taken place in a manner in-keeping with the Western sense of "justice and humanity".

This is because the Allied forces claimed the whole point of the war in Iraq was to remove a regime that, to Western ideals, was "undemocratic and cruel", and to install one that was "democratic and free", (a pointless exercise, I know, but this was the justification).

By executing Saddam's sentence in this 'deplorable' manner, it has patently demonstrated that the Allies have failed in their stated aims of the invasion.

Do not confuse having reservations about the manner of the execution with 'feeling sorry for Saddam' - having the former does not equate to the latter.
His crimes were against Iraq, and Iraq saw fit to punish him in their way. We may not agree with the heckling and insults, but who are we to judge them on our morals??We must accept others cultural rights.
Maybe I should say *cultural differences*
