I've read about global warming & appreciate that not everyone has tumble dryers, but.......

I read in the paper this morning, that Asda, are recommending we should be lowering the temperature of the water in our washing machines (fair enough), but also not to use tumble dryers!!!!

Here we are in 2007, with all the latest technology, but are being advised to go back to the 'olden days'! I love to see a line full of washing drying naturally, but in this awful weather, I for one wouldn't be without my tumble dryer & refuse to go back to the using a clothes horse or having washing draped all over the radiators to dry!

Would you?

P.S. As it was in th newspaper this morning, I thought I'd post it in News, but if you think it should be in Home & Garden, please feel free to report it as such. Ta!

When people have 'the latest technology', they tend to use it without thinking (or planning). In these wet winter months, then it is fair enough to dry your washing in the dryer.
However, I have seen friends who just bung their washing into the dryer, and when you point out that it is a dry and windy day and they can dry the washing for free outside, they put it in the dryer anyway because they 'can't be bothered'.
Or they do their washing and night and straight to the dryer instead of hanging out in the morning.

That is when energy use is wasteful.
i have washing all over my radiators and on a clothes horse - i'd like to be able to waste the lecky on tumble drying!

I totally agree with you Gromit, as I know people who do the same throughout the summer & it astounds me!

There are of course disabled people who are unable to go outside to do this - there are also some who do not have gardens to hang washing out on dry breezy days, but for those of us who do but 'can't be bothered', is just pure laziness!

(Unless there are big black clouds overhead just as you're going out, there's no excuse not to)!
With inceasing global warming there will be less need for tumble driers!
sorry - increasing

Iggy - it was years before we had a washing machine in our house, let alone a tumble dryer, because we simply couldn't afford it!

I had years of using a clothes horse & draping washing over the radiators - but when we finally did buy a tumble dryer, I found it so much easier & it also cut down on the ironing - a great help when I was working full time!

I understand that not everyone can afford to run them & we might not be able to either when we're drawing our pensions - but in the meantime it's nice to have the freedom of choice!

You're probably right there David!
If ASDA Do not want use to use Tumble Dryers Why the hell do they sell them at our local store for less than 80 Pounds .Useing a tumble dryer will not increase your electricity .Why have cloths over radiators preventing heat coming out
david2941 - Using a tumble dryer will not increase your electricity.

Yours nuclear powered?
Question Author
I thought exactly the same thing david2941!

I bet Asda won't stop selling them - not today, or in the near future!

Blinking hypocrites!
Question Author
You just beat me to it DavidUK!

I only agreed that Asda will carry on selling tumble dryers - not that they won't cost more to run! 'Cos they certainly do!

Hi smudge :-)
Well, we're using the clothes horse and the radiators, which I hate to do but no choice.... no tumble dryer...
I spose this stems from the global warming and looking after the environment..... it would be so nice if all the countries were doing that but they're not.....
soon we'll be being advised to hand wash and use the mangle lol.....
oooh, this is getting spooky lol... I just had to find this q. in my profile lol....

Hi Beryl - I remember those days so well.

I can still smell that boiler full of clothes & watching Mum scrubbing away at the sink with wash board! Also helping her with the mangle & turning that heavy handle until my shoulder ached!

Happy days!

It's awful here. The lights keep flickering & I'm terrified that the two tall fir trees in our front garden are going to end up across the road!!!!

I keep looking out of the window wondering whether I should nip out or not, but I think I'll hang on until tomorrow!

Do take care with your little doggy out all that wind & rain!doggy!
