I've always had similar thoughts on the H word as well. A phobia is an extreme and abnormal fear (this is a dictionary definition) which is a whole world away from either a dislike or a distaste.
It strikes me that the H word, and for that matter the R word is bandied about by people far too readilly these days (usually by people who are straight, as far as the H word is concerned, and white, as far as the R word is concerned), and it utterly cheapens the meaning of both.
Now I don't particulary care one way or the other - I'd be lying if I didn't say I find the thought of gay sex distateful, in much the same way as I find tattooes on women distateful but that's just me: whatever they get up to as consenting adults is fair play in my book, and damn good luck to them.
Does that make me a homophobe?
