"Some murderers are serving too long in jail, meaning prisons will become "full of geriatric lifers", Lord Chief Justice Lord Phillips has said. "

This is the problem when u have a soft left wing government ruling. Is this guy taking the mic out of all of us? People should be marched to the gallows, not released. Eye for an eye. He should resign after that comment!!! Typical labour talk!

I agree with the Lord Chief Justice. They should not spend any time in prison. String 'em up.
This is proof that there really is life on other planets .... inhabited by judges and magistrates!
i was gobsmacked when i heard it, is he for real? next he'll be telling us that all they need to do is few hours community service!!!
Well, I am a woolly minded liberal and I disagree with the judge, as well. Violent criminals and murderers should be kept in prison for a long time. The problem of overcrowding would be eased if judges stopped sending the mentally ill to prison and insisted the government built more places of safety for such people. That might be a judges' campaign I could support.
pity they dont send all the immigrants that are in our prisons home be a bit more space then
Left wing government? - Shome Mishtake Shurely?
This government has legislated to increase sentencing - longer minimum sentences etc - so don't blame them.

That's actually what the judge was complaining about - because judges think they're god almighty when it comes to matters of law and don't like politicians or other such 'peasants' treading on their toes.

That's also why a few of them made disgraceful political outbursts such as 'Well Mr paedophile, if the prisons weren't full I'd be putting you in one, but John Reid says you can go free, so it's your lucky day'...during the recent fuss about prison overcrowding.

Just building them a nursing home surely will solve the problem?
Well said ludwig. For years these overblown pillars of wisdom, have managed to jail the innocent and let the guilty go free, nothing surprises me about any of their judgements.
My answer is the same as youngmafbog's
i too agree with yongmafbog and gina32, hang all the murdering scum, and send home all the immigrants that are in prison, you would soon see the benifit , Lord Phillips should be made to talk to the families of children that have been murderd, and tell them that he would like to see their childs muderer back on the streete in a couple of years.
I think a murderer should stay in prison as long as the person they killed remains dead.
mmmm..maybe if judges stopped puttin old people in jail for not payin council tax arrears, theyd be more places for the murderin scum bags.
"For years these overblown pillars of wisdom, have managed to jail the innocent and let the guilty go free"

Surely it's the juries who did that? The judges have to abide by the juries' decisions.
If you wanna kill someone use a Car, but be warned-you could get a nasty slap on your wrist and lose your licence for several weeks..
Get rid of em! Why pay for the upkeep of them with our taxes. Make them into dog food.
I have said this before on AB, we should bring back Capital Punishment
hang the B*****d's that will make plenty of room..

Instead of the holiday camp treatment they're getting at the moment is
This goverment completely crazy.
Totally agree. Introduce the ultimate deterrent!
