At the expese of rate payers
Ken Livingstone is planning on spending �100 million of rate payers money on a mega mosque in London that will be bigger than St Paul's cathedral.
I have no objections to mosques at all but I do think spending �100 million of ratepayers money ( when churches have to fund their own building and repair) extraordinary. Setting aside the fact that based on previous big builds like Wembley, Millenium Dome and Olympic village all seem to end up cost double the estimate the final bill could be �200 million.
It's only going to cause a lot of bad feeling at a partcicularly sensitive time.
Surely the money would be better spent on hospitals, community centres etc?

I think that the way Islamic countries organise their society and legal structure should inform us and we should take careful note.

And yes, I happen to agree, if you can't build a simple Christian place of worship in an Islamic state, then I am danmed if they should be allowed to build mosques here.

I remember the bare bones of this story - a huge mosque is being built on a brownfield site in East London, and the build is being funded privately.
As far as I can recall...those are the facts of the story (if anyone has a link to the real story, please post).
You cannot compare it to building a cathedral in a Muslim country, because we don't pray to God anymore.

sp, I do compare it to the building of Christian churches in Islamic countries. You may not pray to God anymore (it is not politically correct) but please do not think to answer for everybody else.
For my part and my vote, there should be no more mosques built in Britain. It's an irrational belief that flashed across my mind after seeing that all the bombers were Muslim and none were Christian. I expect it's an extraordinary coincidence, and I am probably being racist and religionist.

Seriously...that's something even Daily Mail journalists would reject as being a bit...out there.
From what you post, I wouldn't say you're being racist or religionist (a new term to me)...what you seem to be displaying is a more fundamental human trait.
You're scared and anxious because you believe that the world and Britain in particular is becoming a more dangerous place.
You may be right, you may be wrong. Who knows.
But I'll give you an anaolgy...two neighbours three streets away have been burgled...you buy an alarm, then a big doberman, then a you put barbed wire up around your property and install a huge lighting system.
After that, you hand out permits for people to walk past your house and you sit by the window with a shotgun.
All these measures may very well prevent you from being burgled...but by doing that - you lose everything else. You lose your joy in life. You lose any hope of leaving your house...
That's the best I can come up with.
A few year ago, when I lived in Brixton, and worked in Aldgate (near Brick Lane) and clubbed in Soho, there was that mad bomber who set off bombs in (ta-dah!) Brixton, Brick Lane and Old Compton Street.

I hate to throw the Nazi accusation around but take a look at what you're saying and then compare it to the treatment of Jews in pre-war Germany. And don't go thinking that was the work of some crazy dictator, flying in the face of public opinion. Hitler was acting on a wave of support from people who hated having Jews in their country. If you had read Waldo McFrogg's earlier post you would realise he had already pointed out that in this country, we would hardly want to model what is or isn't permissible on the basis of regimes that operate in other countries particularly Saudia Arabia.
There is a difference between not believing that the British way of life is just teetering on the edge of extinction due to a take over by fundamentalist Muslims, and recognising that many countries including those that are predominately Muslim have less than attractive legal and social framework.

Ignoring the 'not on my turf' mentality, why is nobody bemoaning the fact that a Christian church is being demolished to make way for the Olympics? Perhaps one should petition to save that if they feel strongly enough about their state religion?
As I said prev. the mosque is to be scaled down to 12,000 capacity and is only likely to have about 6,000 at any one time. Planning permission is likely to be resubmitted early next year. It will be in the main, funded privately.
