The law says that ambulances (& fire & police vehicles) and treat red lights as give way junctions whenever they are being used for emergency service purposes.
Protecting the life of somebody would generally be considered - even by the most anti-establishment members of society - to be an emergency service role.
It is against the higway code for any driver to pass through a red traffic light , even a PM . However police ambulances and fire engines may pass through without the driver being prosicuted provided they do so with due care and attention to other road users. THE ONLY EXCEPTION may be the queens messenger when an act of war has been declaired.
