Ambulances and police cars noise
25 Answers
This may sound silly, but im fed up of the over loud sirens emergency services use, and i dont think they need to be that loud. Now, i dont have a problem with sirens in general, if i needed the ambulance or emergency services i would be grateful, but every time an ambulance or police car drives past my ears literally pop and its painful. Ive been to Doctor and they said there's nothin wrong. Is there a national limit on the amount of decibels needed to be used?

These sirens have to be loud so that drivers can hear them over traffic and engine noise, as well as inside a car with its windows closed and perhaps a stereo on.
If this is painful for you then perhaps you should keep some ear plugs with you ready to pop in your ears should you hear an emergency vehicle coming your way.
They will be governed by some legislation although I dont know what decibel limit they would have.

I was a passenger in the ambulance taking my unconcious mother to hospital, I was warned my the crew that they would probably need to use the siren to get through the town traffic jam.
The siren was used to get the car in front to move over slightly to enable us to pass, 4 times they had to use the siren, then the driver turned round and mothed me pointing to himself. The crew said it was quite normal for the siren to be ignored.
The sirens need to be loud to warn traffic ahead that they are coming, then drivers will not pull out in front of them or block crossroads etc.
I am sorry they hurt your ears but how do you cope with car alarms, house/shop alarms, screaming childen and other loud noises

I'm not a big fan of sudden noises either... (high caffine intake).
Could you not just do what I do and walk around with your ipod/cd player firmly attached to your ears?!
Plus then you'll have the added bonus of annoying someone else with your noise as much as you've been annoyed in the past.
Everyone's a winner!

I agreed with SizzleSquid. These sirens drive me mad. I live near a hospital and on a duel carriageway. The number of sirens is ridiculous. I know they need them most of the time and certainly wouldn't want them to stop when necessary. However, the number of times the duel carriageway is EMPTY and they still use the siren infuriates me. They love to do it on a Sunday in particular. Late at night, early in the morning etc. I think there are certain drivers that do it because some shifts don't use them except for an occasional quick burst, but some shift DEFINATELY use them on purpose. You can almost imagine them thinking.... I'm up and awake Sunday morning and so you shall be too!!! As I say.... on an empty road on a quiet morning there's no need. Mind you I daren't complain - they might blacklist me!!!!
I've no objection to the sirens, but I do wish radio stations were banned from using them in plays, etc. Several times out of the blue a siren has sounded, and I desperately look around to see where it's coming from so that I can get out of the way if necessary - only to find it's coming from the radio. Confusing - to say the least.

I live next door to a Hospital and the emergency accident unit is a few hundred yards from my house, i hardly ever hear ambulance sirens at all, they are only used when necessary by the drivers, i never hear them at night at all as the roads are clear, perhaps the ambulance drivers here in Stoke are better trained than most. i suggest that if drivers are using sirens at night on clear roads that you report it to the revelent authorities.
