I do not understand what is going on. When are the people (judges i presume) who are responsible for these lenient sentences going to get their act together. Paedophoiles will not respond to punishment. They cannot control themselves. A prison sentence does not teach them a lesson. It controls them, keeps them away from children. when this man has served his sentence, he will be let out to do it again. Phaedophiles need to be locked up for life. what good does the sex offenders register do? How many children have been assaulted or even killed by these perverts who have a previous record ? Sarah Payne was murdered by a paedophile with a previous history wasn't she? She would be alive today if he had been controlled. If a dog attacks a child it is destroyed. if a paedophile attacks a child he gets a couple of years in prison, and then he is let out to do it again. what is the difference between these people and a dangerous dog? Why does society tolerate this? Something needs to be done, and quickly!
sambro, you made a couple of very valid comments. Just what good does the Sex Offenders Register do? None that I can see, since if these people have the opportunity to re-offend, clearly they aren't monitored closely enough. As for your point about dogs, it's a shame we don't keep paedophiles on a lead - permanently!
The only reason I can see that society continually tolerates this is that the powers that be appear to care more for the welfare of the offender than that of the victim.
Communities ought to be made aware of the location of these dangerous people - and pictures of their faces should be posted on every available billboard. If capital punshment isn't acceptable in this so-called civilised country, then at least the rest of the communty should know from whom they need to protect their children. I know some here will say that such a measure would create witch hunts - but if that's the case, then so be it. I have no sympathy whatsoever for paedophiles. The safety of children should be our main priority, but with the law as it is, it is not.

The reason that the sentence is so lenient is because he pleaded guilty (thus saving not only the cost of a trial but more importantly having to put the child and family through a terrible ordeal).
According to the Sentencing Guidelines council, Statute requires that a court must impose the shortest term that is commensurate with the seriousness of the offence.
Don't blame the judge - his hands are tied.

Hmmm, i am with naomi on this.
There should be no acceptance of padofilia in our country.
We are supposed to be a civilised nation and these sort of people dont belong in society.
Like someone above says, 5 years will be 2 years. The child is probably scarred for life. These people need locking up permanantly.
Scientists have proven that they cant be re-habilitated no matter how many do-gooders try and help out...

I do sympathise with these paedophiles. They didn't choose to be this way. Some of them hate being what they are, know that they cant control it and beg to be kept locked up. But this costs money. Money that the government are not prepared to spend . So they are let loose to do it again and again. The sentencing guidelines need overhauling.
If my memory serves me right the the culprit responsible for nearly every child that is sexually abused and then murdered is a previous sex offender.Thats were the sex offenders register is useful. It enables the police to round up all the known offenders in the area. But that is like shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted. This does NOT protect our children. Forget punishment , it does not work. Keep these predators away from children forever!

Hmmm, i certainly wouldnt mind paying more tax to protect the kids from these people.
Or maybe they could transfer some funds from the
EFFIN DO GOODERS
(English Foundation For Immigrants Needing Digs Or Giro's Out Of Decent Englishmens Ruddy Salaries) pot to fund a project which keeps paedofiles away from children. Maybe some special island or something...

Ha! well what comes around goes around I think. Sadly not a long enough time in prison for my money.
Do I sound harsh. Well I ought to do. This was the bloke my ex went off with.
He hit my eldest daughter (amongst other things) and we got her out but the other two a girl and boy stayed.
Then he hit the boy and that poor child of mine ended up in foster care and then ended up with his sister going to his grandparents to live. They are safe now but I will never fogive those who would not listen when I was saying something was wrong. Having said that the authorities in Durham are much faster off the mark than they were here and for that a big well done from me.
As an ending to this story they lied in court after having me arrested for hitting him (and I wish I had now) and I very nearly got sent down. I notice all the old same stories being used in this recent court hearing but thankfully it didn't do any good.
Oh yea and she had a baby to the guy and while my two kids were pulled out the baby stayed.
Makes you wonder eh?
Well that's one more evil man off of the street. At least for now.
Anybody that has any remote sympathy for him, DONT. He is not a nice person at all in my opinion.

i've just found this site whilst looking for something else on the internet, for anyone feeling sorry for neville gray as moulder said DONT.
unfortunately moulder i have experience of this man too, my daughter was his victim, it was reported to police in 2001 they sent two people to interview my daughter one police officer and a social worker, both were male and at the time my daughter was terrified of men and refused to speak to them, all they could get out of her was that she hated him and never wanted to see him again, i was told by the social worker later the same week that they believed he had done something but that social services did'nt need to be involved as she was safe away from him and being well looked after, the police on the other hand did'nt even bother letting us know what was happening, a year passed and after still having no word from police i went to them to find out what was going on, only to be told that they were not going to take it further as they considered gray to be mentally unstable and he would use it as a defence.
the result of it all was that my daughter lived the past few years in terror afraid he was going to get her again, she went from sleeping with no night light to having one on, she waited until myself and my husband went to bed then went round the house checking all doors and windows were locked because she thought he was going to come in while we slept, we ended up having to put security lights up outside back and front also have a burgler alarm fitted with movement detectors in the rooms, and then we had to put cctv camera's up just so that she could sleep nights. over the past years he has stalked her, now he's locked up till 2011, not enough in my book. it was my daughters school that finally got the police to take notice and action because of how terrified she was, thank god they sent women to interview her otherwise he would still be in the community.

I'm sorry to find you here I really am. I knew of this situation prior to it going to Court because Social Services contacted me with relation to the two children my wife had taken with her and him. Needless to say the kids don't believe a word of it and I'm the biggest so and so in the world.
Interesting that we have both tackled the problem in the same way and that we have had the same attitude from the Police.
I have CCTV at home and at work and extra security in place at work too.
I had the Police telling my eldest daughter she was telling lies and then I got a Police report stating he was unstable and not a good father figure.
We had all sorts of horror stories about this guy and to be quite frank, I'm not looking forward to him being released. His conviction had nothing to do with me but that will mean nothing in his mind.
I hope your daughter feels a little safer now and that the wounds heal over time although I very much doubt that he damage done will ever totally heal for her.
Please keep in touch and I will check the site a little more often. then if anything does kick off we can at least warn each other.
Stay strong.
Best wishes,
Moulder
