It has been that way for yonks. So Its obvious - move away from the south east and head north. We are only 2 hours away from the family so not truly up north (tho the family deem it to be). Rewards? Apart from seeing more of your tax money put to good use, its driving that will surprise the most. There are hardly any speed bumps, speed cameras, the roads are not pot holed, the drivers more polite and cars driven calmly. The traffic is less dense too. And I'm in a city. You will be better off financially after buying a cheaper house and paying cheaper council tax. You dont have to go miles before you see the countryside and it isn't boringly flat up here either. Lastly, the people are most definitely happier. They talk and smile when serving you in shops too. My husband is just getting used to that. I am on friendlier terms with my neighbours here in a couple of months than I was over years down south.
The south is neither good on your pocket, your nerves, or your soul. It may be my age but the London area is manic and you can have it.
