Ian Ruby
Ian Ruby has been detained at Broadmoor for stabbing three teenage girls.
He has been diagnosed with a schizoid personality disorder and Asperger's syndrome. He was arrested carrying a bag containing weapons and it is probably likely he would have attacked someone at some point.
My point is however, that these girls were apparently teasing him on a bus, flicking his ears, slapping him on the head.
It is my opinion that they partially brought this upon themselves, they obviously have no respect for other people, and also these days, you have no way of knowing whether someone is dangerous or not.
They have found this out the hard way and I hope that they have learned their lesson.

My son does lash out sometimes but we are trying to teach him to find other coping mechanisms. I'm not saying this is an excuse for what this person did but coupled with his schizoid disorder he wouldn't have taken much provocation before he snapped. His parents or carers should have known what he was like and got treatment for the mental health problem whilst teaching him the way to cope with awkward social situations.
Sorry if you think I am being a bit harsh, and may be he wasn't being given the help he needed, but my point is that everyone should reasonably expect to travel on a bus without being harrassed.
If they had left him alone, then they would have come to no harm, as they wouldn't have come to his attention.
What would be your view if he had punched them, instead of stabbing them

If he wasn't mentally ill and was what we like to call a well adjusted person, would he have been carrying a bag of weapons?
There should be procedures in place to stop potentially violent patients with a history of mental illness from walking around unsupervised, but there aren't.
I am not focussing on Ian Ruby specifically, just using him as an example, what I am trying to get across is that individuals should not get themselves in situations where they could provoke a violent reaction from a stranger.
For example, I don't stare at other men's wives/girlfriends when in the pub, or remonstrate with a driver who cuts me up, as I have no way of telling if these people have short fuses or are just plain nasty, and have no problems hurting people. They don't have to be mentally unstable to do it, just easily offended.
