He didn't drown. He died of hypothermia.
Fireman's BA simply don't work under water anyway.

Frankly, I'm a bit surprised they didn't cut his foot off to save his life, it's what I'd want in that circumstance.
It wasn't his foot that was stuck, it was his thigh. They would not attempt such an operation as to cut off his leg at the thigh in a swollen drain.

thanks Gromit, I didn't know that it was Hypothermia.
read the news on him in bbc news on line
Really tragic.....there must have been a way to free him if only to reverse his entry into the drain

Accidents will always happen. Its life no one is to blame - bloodsucking lawyeres take note
I read an interview with the doctor that was there when he was stuck and he said there was no way he couldve amputated cuz they were struggling just to stand up in the water torents and he wouldve had to of gone under to see it properley and at that time they didnt really know how or where he was stuck, it's tragic
I cannot beleive that they did not do every possible thing that they could to get him out. I imagine they will be deeply distressed about it for a long long time. What a tragedy.
