Each religion epxeriences a high-point in fundamentalism; remember Islam is 400 years younger than Christianity. In real terms Islam is in the 1600s, scientology even younger. They are still crying 'heresy' and 'blasphemy' - it'll soon wear off :-)

I don't accept that Christianity and Judaism are as serious in terms of brainwashing. Others maybe. In the case of Islam, seems to me its followers mainly comprise A) people born into Muslim families - in which case so much for individuality, B) disillusioned folk looking for answers in life - who'd be well advised to keep looking, and C) people from non-Muslim families trying to rebel and say FU, not unlike Princess Di in her final years. I doubt Scientology will ever be taken seriously with all the publicity it gets (aside from its actual foundation beliefs), so why is Islam not just taken seriously but threatening to take over the UK? It's so obviously bad news, so why ARE we letting it happen?
I think Islam gives disillusioned youngsters (men!) a sense of belonging, especially if they are living in an alien culture (such as new immigrants to the UK).
It's far easier to follow a rule book than think for yourself.
I've plenty of Muslim friends, so don't think all Muslims are radical, but I do think those that are fundamentalist are weak and find it easier to follow what someone is telling them.
Modern (and the original) Christianity is totally different. A true Christian follows the teachings of Jesus and not a dogma laid down by a 'church'. And Jesus always encouraged free-thinking and action. And he stated that the most important teaching was 'love one another'. He didn't add 'only if they follow my teachings too'. True Christianity encourages you to question theology and question why you believe what you believe, not follow blindly.
What value does belief have if you just follow a doctrine and don't understand why you are following it? I fear that Islam stiffles free-thinking, which is, in effect, brainwashing.

Scientology is not a religion. It is a cult.
I mean, fer gawds sake, supposedly intelligent people believe in a 'religion' dreamt up by a sci-fi author just 50 years ago which states we are descended from aliens.
Hubbard must be absolutely ******* himself laughing that he's managed to dupe a load of idiots into believing this old pony.

All religion is brain washing to a certain extent. All religions believe theirs is correct and all the others are false. It amazes me that anyone intelligent can believe any of the different brands of fairy tale. if they just stood back objectively, surely anyone with an ounce of sense can tell it's all total b0ll0cks, I dispair for the human race if we cannot achieve this realisation some stage.
Very true, there are very dangerous people out there...
