Sex Changes on the NHS.

In the press today it is estimated that the NHS are spending approximately 70 million pounds per year on sex changes.
This includes all the counselling and psychology stuff as well as the obvious operation and after care.
I have nothing against gaylords whatsoever, but admit to finding the whole gender reassignment thing a trifle odd, perhaps almost perverted.
Are we as NI contributors justified in this expenditure where little old Mrs Miggins has to wait months, if not years, for her hip op?
I admit to have never actually known a trans-sexual, and can not comprehend what must be going on in their mind, but strongly believe they simply need a bit of "get a grip therapy" and wake up and smell the coffee.
Without being base, over 50 percent of lezzas look like men anyway and can easily wear a strap on if they want a tinky winky to play with. And as most burnt their bra years ago, their breasts will resemble spaniels ears without any femininity whatsoever.
Likewise a man can grow breasts without an operation and can always do a tuck in like Buffalo Bill on Silence of the Lambs if he wants to look in the mirror and see a hairy mary.

Where there is suffering, this has to be addressed, and if a person is genuinely suffering, as determined by the health specialists, then it is right that some funding should be diverted to these cases.
Your comparison could easily be made against childless couples, who are funded for fertility treatment. Some childless couples may well just accept their lot in life, whereas others genuinely suffer.
Difficult decisions have to be made and the experts may not always get it right, but it is right that they try, and that money is made available.
There will never be enough money in the NHS for everything, and so comparisons like yours are inevitable.

Well, Abdulmajid, as a post operative transsexual I have to say its slightly more complicated than your humorously written question makes out. (But I would say that wouldn't I )
Transsexualism has been recognised as a medical condition for many years now and the process, which follows the Harry Benjamin principles (Johns Hopkins Hospital in the USA) is long and complicated, involving psychiatry, psychotherapy and surgery, in addition to hormonal treatment.
As a medical condition I do believe it is a valid treatment, though the number of people applying for such treatment has increased considerably and I believe research should be carried out to determine why this has happened. Are there really more transsexuals?Or has societies more tolerant approach made it easier for people to come forward and seek treatment and is this actually a good thing for the NHS in its present form
I believe the psychiatric treatment should be readily available, but the surgery should be carried out on a basis similar to student loans. THe NHS pay and the post operative transsexual repays the cost when they are financially able. I would hope these payments could be very small and spread over a lifetime and not just a few years. That would be my solution though I don't believe many in the transsexual community who use the NHS system would agree.

The NHS should not be paying for these attention seeking nutters. If they want a conversion then they should bl00dy well pay themselves. I just don't buy all this "wrong body" horsesh1t.

Why should we throw good money at keeping the elderly going? They've had a lifetime to put money aside for their illnesses, inevitably brought on by stuffing themselves full of fatty foods and years of puffing on ciggies.
If they haven't had the foresight to put some cash aside, rather than spending it up the bingo or down the bookies, they would have more money for private medical treatments.
