labour this september are thinking of bringing in a policy to hide fags low down behind the counter. Fine thats ok with me as im a smoker but who is going to pay for the reftting of the shop mmm>? Why is labour thinking of doing this when they should be putting all there efforts in to binge drinking when kids cant handle there booze and then give law biding people a lot of grief

If they are really concerned, why don't they make tobacco illegal?
the point is that the govt are trying to stop people smoking but they will lose millions of pounds in tax if they succeed.the question should be how are they going to recoup the lost money?they will recover it in more stealth taxes thats how.so why should i and millions of other non smokers be penalised if people stop smoking?
I agree Scorp

Never seen anyone throw back a packet of fags then go out vandalising cars eh
They want to stop hitting the smoker and stop the binge drinking
now im not advocating binge drinking whatsoever but ive known a couple of people who have died of passive smoking.
Here's a wild idea

Why isn't it paid for by those who've made so much money by filling NHS cancer wards with their dying customers!

Good grief you'll be wanting us to have a wip round for drug pushers who've fallen on hard times next.

Barmy Labour indeed!

your point is what exactly?
Oh Jake - don't you think that is a little naive?
then they will be made to hide fatty foods and salty foods and all other things that our (unt of a government says we shouldnt be eating (but is ok for them to partake of, do as i say not as i do ) and whilst theyre at it make them hide all alchoholic drinks. Gonna be pretty dull in Tescos soon

tarpaulins is the business to be in the way things are going

5 years lol not in this country jake the peg, my point was just a bit of fun and humour
I'm not sure there'd necessarily be any refitting necessary. And if there is they'd probably expect whoever owns the shop to pay for it.

It's a daft plan anyway though. It won't work and is supremely pointless. And even if it does, any effect it has would be negligible: nobody spontaneously starts smoking if they've got some spare change at the counter, and if they're at the point where they're considering it there's invariably much greater factors involved than 'Ooh! Impulse Purchase!'

I've said it before and I'll say it again: education is the only real solution to such problems.
I wish the government would go the whole hog and make smoking illegal. they would be doing myself and other smokers a favour. They wont though, will they? it would be worth giving up just to hear the non smokers whinge on about their taxes going up just to keep public services going. Be careful what you wish for.
Smokers taking up NHS beds have paid for those beds hundreds of times over with what they have paid in duty on tobacco. .
persianlady well put , i am a smoker but have to confess,

I have never bought any "ciggies" here uk that is,
since 1985 . today they are 2*10p in spain bearing in
mind that's inclusive of tax! WE ARE ROBBED BLIND IN UK

Consider this! GIBRALTER british yeh! 200 ciggies there,
6.00.Bearing in mind also they have been shipped to Spain & Gibralter by John Players from Nottingham.

Browns final move i expect , Will be to close down J Ps
at Nottingham , the tw&t.

Actually the Government looses</B money when people stop smoking.

OK cancers drop but people who give up smoking live longer and take up NHS beds in old age with diseases more common then.

Whatever you may think this is not about money it's about public health.

If it were about money they'd be encouraging people to smoke.

I wonder how many widows and orphans of smokers would think that closing down cigarette factories would be the action on a Tw&t?
So in summary, this proposed policy will be a bad idea because:

a) it will cost shopkeppers too much money.
b) it will make Tesco's look dull.
c) it will lead to a rise in aggravated burglaries of shopkeepers.

Have I got that right? Is that actually what people are saying?

Even for AB, that is staggering.
No.

It's a bad proposal because it won't work. It is therefore pointless. So the expense involved in introducing such measures would be pointless.
What difference is it going to make where cigarettes are on display or hidden the kids will still get there elder mates to buy them for them. Are they going to put all the drink under the counter too.Its like when I was young we could not get the naughty films from the video hire shops as they were under the counter but come on admit it you got your older mates to get one .I admit I did.
So what are you saying

"Can't do it won't try?"

It would be better to require mandatory photo ID (even if someone is clearly 80)

But hey, what's the worst that can happen?

A few annoyed tobacco companies

Boo Hoo
There are far more effective ways to combat smoking (such as education) and you well know it. This proposal will have no discernible effect, so there is no point in persuing it.

It's like proposing that all road signs be increased in size by about 5cm. in order to enhance their visibility. There's nothing wrong with the idea of reducing road fatalaties, but that won't do it, and is pointless. The same applies here.
The aim should be to discourage new smokers. I do not see this proposal doing that. The habit is usually taught to children by their parents. The child daily witnessing mum and dad smoking. The majority of new smokers come from homes were the parents smoke, so banning their display in shops will do nothing.

Use the existing laws more vigorously to prosecute shopkeepers and parents.
