Just been confirmed HSBC has lost a datra disc with information on 370,000 customers.

The disc did not contain bank account details. It had data relating to how much insurance cover the 370,000 had with the bank, their name and birth date.

This is a stupid way to transfer data, and they will undoubtedly be fined. The bank will be liable if any fraud takes place that is connected with the lost CD.

It may be slightly worrying for the 370,000 but in the immediate instance. The rest of us should be concerned that the big banks and government agencies are not taking security seriously enough. Fines and bolloxing by the authorities might help focus their minds.

So would this relate to mortgage customers ?

Still worrying if they are so laxed on security .
Is it safe to bank now ?

HSBC have been very lax here, but all the rest of the banks are equally lax with security. None are better or worse than any other.

But, unless you know of another system, using a bank is unavoidable.

Many of the 370,000 will have their mortgage with HSBC, but as I read it, non of those details were on the disc.

Thats a relief. I don't own a house so I'm not worried but bad news for those who do.
