Because he would never leave united, and his brilliant team which he has built.
I have to say that as a manager he is brilliant but I do wish he wasn't such a miserable git!
Hands off Sir A
He's a Scot, we get first dibs on him
it would probably be a big drop in salary - and a thankless task.
Alex Ferguson is Scottish and I dont think any Scottish manager could bring himself to manage England.

Plus I doubt if the FA would ever ask a Scotsman to manage England.

Also, he is a successful manager at Man Utd, well paid, well respected, winning trophies.

Why would he want to leave?

Finally being England manager is a poisoned chalice. Whoever gets the jobs gets called all sorts of awful names by the press and their private life is ruined, so why bother.
Because he is English

Congratulations, you have just won "stupidest Answerbank answer of the year" award.
I've seen answers on AB that were far more stupid than that one VHG,in fact I have posted a couple of them myself :-)
because he's a sweaty, even if you could get him to take the job he'd probably mis manage England!
If we're having any Scottish managers then I want Gordon. Sure, we'll probably still fail miserably but at least he'll make us laugh.

I don't think he's actually ever expressed any interest in the job has he? Also he's quite an old lad now, there was talk of him retiring a few years back I think but he decided to do another few years with Man Utd.

And I can't see him leaving that when he does eventually retire and going on to be the England manager, the success and glory he's had with them could never be replicated in the national team so if it were me I'd rather be remembered as the manager of one of the greatest premier league sides (you have no idea how much it hurt to write that).
TBH Harry Redknapp is on par with Alex Ferguson.
lol - harry redknapp on a par with sir alex.....now that should be up for the stupidist award....
Harry Rednapp is only on par with...

Yawn
Got them promoted to prem in 2003, saved them from relegation in 2006. Won the FA cup and ended up 8th in prem. Sent southampton down; whats the problem here?
Sir Alex was offered the England job in1996 when Terry Venables quit but Alex said that he could never see himself leading a team out against Scotland (whom he managed at the 1986 World Cup finals).

Thank you for your responses. A mate of mine who knows a lot about football concurs with many of your posts. Apparently he isn't interested in managing the England side because of his Scots roots.

And then there's the whole 'poisoned chalice' thing.

Football is complicated.

Surely they won not because of how good Ferguson is - but simply in the end, by luck - i.e penalty shoot out .

There is nothing he could have done or said that would dertimined if a player missed a penalty or not

( this is from a non football interested person , by the way )
England has so far not been able to bend the rules allowing foreign players to play for us. Take away Manchester united's foreign players and they would find it difficult to produce a five a side team.
