As I have pointed out before when other questions have been raised along these lines:

At present the sentencing guidelines "starting point" for possession of a bladed instrument in public is custody. New guidelines are effective from 4th August and the starting point for this offence is reduced to a community sentence.

Totally agree - but given a referendum on this topic, the government know full well what the answer'd be (as with most other referendums), and then they'd be too weak to back it up!

If you want to hang anybody who carries a knife, you are now encouraging them to use the knife and to also murder their victims instead of threatening their victim - after all the penalty is the same.

Kill somone = death penalty
Stab someone = death penalty
Carry a knife = death penalty

The problem has no solution, it comes with the territory. and is here to stay. Imprisonment is no solution, there simply aren't enough cells. We can only hope that they keep the violence in-house, and let them get on with it.

However, the penalty for the murderers if convicted should be draconian.
