Smoking ban

11 months and counting since the smoking ban came into effect. Are ther any figures relating to how many peole have given up since/because of the smoking ban?

Can anyone help?

Been two years here in Scotland, don't think any figures have been released as yet.

don't think so but 4 pubs have shut down near my friends house and the club my other friend goes to is near to closing.near me 3 pubs have shut and trade is down at the ones that are left

I'm not sure, but I went to my favourite restaurant last weekend - first time since the smoking ban was enforced. It's small and used to allow smoking so we stopped going as it was not very pleasant sometimes.

So it was lovely to not have to breathe in smoke, but for a Saturday night it wasn't anywhere as busy as it used to be. I wonder if there is a connection between the two.

There will not be any meaningful stats until the year is up.

In Scotland, where the ban came in a year earlier than England, Hospitals reported a 17% decrease in the number of admissions for heart attacks. A reduction attributed in part, to the smoking ban.

A year will give no meaningful statistics since we are now entering a recession.

The restaurant that Mully79 mentions is a case in point - is it quiet because of the smoking ban, or because people don't have so much disposable income to eat out?

You have no statistics to say that is because of smoking.

It may just as likely be that they were painted pink, or had a jukebox, or didnt serve food, or just the fact that many pubs are closing anyway because you can buy 20 cans of beer in a supermarket for under �10 when they charge more than �2 a pint in a pub.

The Wetherspoons near me, that is on our local high street, is packed most of the time. They serve food, prices are good for both drink and food, they have big screen TV showing sport, children are welcome, and they dont have annoying background music. So it can be done.

loads of bars and clubs have shut near me but then loads of bars and clubs open and shut all the time in birmingham cigy center.

Well my local shut down 3 weeks ago.

I personally know many people who have managed to pack in fags for good because of the ban. Pubs in my area seem the same as ever but I dont frequent the pubs anyway. None have closed. I am in Scotland where ban has been in force much longer.

The club where I work has seen a marked decrease in trade since the ban. I too wonder why all those people who were always banging on about not going out because of the smoke are - not many of them seem to be filling the smoke-free pubs and clubs!

lets take the club my friend goes in as an example,during the afternoon early evening if he goes in, he is sometimes the only one in because ,fred ,john etc no longer walk to the club to have a pint and a game of cards and then have to go outside to have a cig.he spoke to the steward and asked him how bad the takings were since the smoking ban came in. he told him the actual bar takings for the week and they don't cover the running costs. in the stewards words (don't forget he will lose his job) he said the club will shut in the next 6 months unless trade picks up .with a lot of the smokers staying away ,only going in friday and saturday do you think it can survive. the same thing is happening to a labour club not far from me a lot of the older ones now stay at home since the smoking ban. that club is also having problems.

that it one description for my friends club that had a nice long waiting list to become a member.(pokey little scruffy jobsworth hell holes ) lets hope no of these kind of people try to join your golf club they may scratch your car as they park there pushbike outside.

wetherspoons were non smoking long before the smoking ban came in

As for the "Working Mens' Clubs", they may well have been on their way out - but their demise must be being hastened by the ban. I would imagine that the majority of their client�le would be heavy smokers.
