Why are ITV holding a 90th birthday celebration of Mandela?

I've never seen them do it for any other politician!

No, really. Why? I know many people have elevated him to demi-god status, and perhaps, perhaps, it is an achievement to reach this age with some of the adversity he faced, but does it really warrant a toe-curlingly embarrasing display of sycophancy by our second TV station?

I really don't know, but what I would like to know from Mr Mandela is, why doesn't he condemn that piece of crap posing as a human Mugabe in Zimbabwe? he is maybe the only person in the world, other blacks will listen to, but he hasn't done it yet, come on Nelson stand up and slate this nasty piece of crap mugabe.

Mandela's not respected because of the adversity he faced but because he was instrumental in achieving somthing that pretty much nobody thought was possible.

A largely peaceful transition from the South African Apartheit regieme to the modern South Africa.

How there wasn't a bloody civil war I'll never know.

Tell you what ,there are enough similar chalenges - why don't you do similar in the middle East or Zimbabwe before you stick the knife in.

I think the thing about Mandela is that lots and lots and lots of people in this country like and respect him.

Therefore, holding a massive concert to celebrate one of the greats of the 20th century will please lots and lots and lots of people who will then watch the programme, generating ITV lots and lots and lots of money in advertising revenue.

Haven't you noticed other leaders of black African countries hate to butt in especially Zimbabe for fear of being a white man's stooge. This includes Mandela who has made his name overcoming white rule so he is hardly likely to turn on a sixpence. Underneath their skin they must be quaking in their boots for the injustices especially to the white farmers.

I think the thing about Mandela is that lots and lots and lots of people in this country like and respect him.

Who are these lots and lots and lots of people. The only people who do are our politicians, and truth know, I don't think the majority of them would even give him lip service given half the chance.

Still no one has come up with an answer of why they erect statues of him, decorate him, name places after him, and now put on a concert in his honour. What hold has he got over our two faced politicians?

I think the tone of the writing in my link is a little, shall we say, biased (and certainly I can't say whether I agree with it or not because I don't know enough about the subject), but if there are going to be links showing the brutality of the white regime, I think a little balance is called for.

Nelson Mandela is supposedly the worlds greatest humanitatian icon so why doesn't he voice his opinion on the atrocities of Mugabe the 90th birthday celebrations will just be another showcase for so called celebrities to get an airing.

They had a concert for the great man's 70th birthday in 1988 and again for his 80th in 1998. Each was televised, live albums and videos and DVDs released. The lots and lots of people, are the people who tuned in last time, and bought all the cr@ppy merchandise.

If there were not lots and lots interested, ITV would not be bothered in showing it. They are in it to make a profit from advertising, not for any altruistic reasons.

Didn't Mugabe say he had to be removed by God. Then if we are led to believe Mandela fits the bill.

Gromit I can't see your point, they can put on a Rock Concert for any reason whatsoever, and it will still attract the crowds, given what artists are on the bill.

The point is why put on a concert for this man in particular?

Why not put on a concert in aid of the maimed soldiers coming back from Afghsnistan & Iraq? This would be a much better cause. Or is the real reason to raise yet more money for the Aid's charities?
