What makes the Mail worse is that it actually tricks people (like my mum) into genuinely believing it to be a factual intelligent newspaper - (at least the sun is known to all be cr@p!) - despite reporting that red wine will kill you one day and you'll die if you don't drink red wine the next. It also fuels people's negative views on asylum seekers, those on benefits, foreigners, labour, the nhs, gay people, ill people, disabled people etc.
I agree with becks. My Labour-voting parents buy it and quote large, untrue tracts from it as if they're fact. The Mail also manipulate figures on asylum-seekers by showing a list with the UK at the top of countries taking them in. What they don't show, is the dozen countries above the UK who take in many more asylum-seekers. If this wasn't so inflammatory, it would be funny, but this kind of journalism only gives ultra right-wing parties more material with which to deceive the voter
What makes me angry about the Daily Wail is that they will spend days blathering on about asylum seekers, coming up with horror stories of how immigrants are (apparently) all coming here to scrounge benefits, mug our war heroes and go round in gangs beating up white teenagers blah blah blah, and then have the audacity to go all hand-wringy and pretending to be upset when the BNP get yet another scumbag thug elected to a council somewhere. If they really don't want the far-right monster to eat, maybe they should stop bloody feeding it!
I sometimes wonder what the likes of Peter Hitchens, Simon Heffer, Leo McKinstry and Jeff Powell are like in real life, because they seem a right nasty bunch in print. Only Suzanne Moore and Ian Wooldridge seem to redress the balance to any extent.
As for becks' comment that it is the most homophobic...etc paper, the worst thing is that it's probably a badge they wear with pride.
Still, at least they've got Fred Bassett :O)
Despite being abhorent to me in every way...
For what it is, the Daily Mail is very good at what it does. You'd be suprised how many news items that the BBC/ITV News runs, purely because there was an article in The Mail.
It's the voice of narrow minded, middle England.... House Prices...Interest Rates...Asylum Seekers...How bad the BBC is....
Although I do have to admit a liking for the Scrabblegrams section!
