After reading this article, it reminded me of some of the posters on this site.

Particularly interesting was the venom poured on an 82-year-old woman by Guardian and New Statsman readers.

I am glad that I read the Daily Mail, at least it has not turned me into these pathetic nasty beings.

completely agree AOG, I hated her at the time but she is a damn far better than this load of imbiciles we have in charge(if you can call it that) now.
If the falkland happened now Brown would roll over and let the Argies have them.
Never has the word politics been more appropriate.

poli(meaning many) tics( blood sucking parasites).

Dave.
Are you really an old git ? or maybe too young to have witnessed how much pain that woman put us through . She's not just some 82 year old harmless old lady as you seem to suggest .
The woman was evil . If things had been different she would have been tried as a war criminal for the sinking of the Belgrano for one thing , never mind the poll tax , the destruction of the manufacturing base in this country , ensuring the 'Troubles' in Northern Ireland carried on for another 20 years etc etc .
The very idea that she should have a state funeral is beyond belief . Mussolini's death springs to mind as a more apt end .
On numerous occasions, I've made my opinion of the Daily Mail quite clear.

But I have to say, this time, I do think the author has a point. I, as a supporter of her legacy, do concede that Thatcher did plenty of harm (in the short term) to plenty of people. But the sheer bile that she receives is absolutely shameful. I think I'd probably say the same of any politician - introducing that kind of populist hatred in any way severely lowers the tone and character of politics generally.

I'm not sure if any of the article's other examples stands up to scrutiny though. David Kelly, for instance, is scraping the barrel a bit...

After reading this article, it reminded me of one of the posters on this site.

Particularly interesting was the incessant volume of bile poured on non-whites by an 82-year-old incontinent mad woman by the name of antheoldgit.

I am glad that I read the Daily Pasta Knitter, at least it has not turned me into this pathetic nasty being.
Kromovaracam , what ' severely lowers the tone and character of politics generally. ' is politicians of any persuasion.

I was born in the Forties, brought up in Dagenham, a strictly working class district, and from my perspective, Maggie was. and sto;; is, the best post war premier this country has had,

Of course, if you were a Miner or Printer, you wouldn't say that, but they brought their troubles on themselves.

I have to agree, I dislike Thatcher and I will never become a fan but to celebrate her death is in very bad taste.
For once AOG, I agree with you.

I could imagine 323 bereaved Argentinian mothers objecting to a state funeral, but surely Guardian readers should be more reverential.
And there are those who remember she initiated the Single European Market, the source of all these crackpot directives about how bent bananas can be. Indeed, the likes of Wedgewood Benn will never forgive her for signing every European Treaty put before her, and not getting us out while we could.

And the trots will never forgive her for the Poll Tax. A much fairer system than the rates, which totally ignored the ability to pay.

No, the pinkos are being very disingeuous in not recognizing the Iron Ladys achievements.

BTW, is the Mail having trouble filling it's pages? Just wondered why they are filling their pages with recycled rubbish from the Guardian's Letters page.
It is difficult to believe that anyone could be naive enough to read the daily mail, step up aog and buy the sunday sport
Try asking that question in Scotland today: we have long memories.

We remember
Shipyards (now gone)
Steelworks (now gone)
Poll Tax (thankfully, now gone).....

The list goes on.

From the Falklands to Iraq, her legacy is with us.
As for the press, I'm glad that I read the Herald. I enjoy the crossword.
Luckily the right wing have never complained about Tony Blair or Gordon Brown.

And if you don't think that the Daily Mail is nasty, well........
I'm agog at this line from the article:

"no one does viciousness quite like the Left."

From the Daily Mail

That's almost funny enough to be a line from Blackadder.

That the author doesn't see the irony of that line is beyond hilarious.

It's like Amy Winehouse writing an article in the NME titled, "PETE DOHERTY SHOULD STOP DOING DRUGS".

Amazing.
By the way, despite my antipathy to Thatcher, I agree that some of the posts are particularly vitriolic...

...which is exactly why there should not be a state funeral for her. It's not just the chattering classes who despise her - there's a sizeable number of working class people who's families/communities/towns/lives were effectively destroyed by Thatcher's pursuit of free market principles.

Whether you agree or disagree with her economic policies is irrelevant...she's roundly hated by so many people, you'd be opening up old wounds...

She really, really, really, really doesn't deserve a state funeral. There's better things my tax money should be spent on.
The vitriol poured on Thatcher is a direct result of the serious resentment her actions as PM caused - even after all this time.

She is certainly not, as Quentin Letts tried to infer, some defencelss old dear being terrorised in her council house (sorry, showing my age, w don;t have any now do we?) by a gang of hoodies.

Thatcher was, and probably is, more than capable of mixing it in a debate over policy and approach with anyone from any walk of life, and as a woman in a man's world, she was to be admired.

That fact is sadly eclipsed by her rampant egomaina and inability to comprehend that dissent and opposition are actually two different things.

The notion that a leader who had to be forcibly removed by her own party is deserving of a state funeral is franly farcical.

If the right-wing media took off their rosy nostalgia-smeared glasses and looked at the reality of Thatcher'w power years, she would be allowed to die peacefully, as have almost all political leaders - because that is as it should be.

Thatcher was a politicain, not a 'hero'.
Very good point Andy.
sorry, showing my age, w don;t have any now do we?

Plenty of council houses where I am. In fact, I could name at least three people off the the top of my head who live in council houses.

Andy, obviously you're entitled to dislike Thatcher, and I'd agree that she doesn't deserve a state funeral (albeit for different reasons). But none of what you've said excuses the sheer bile that's projected at her by her opposition.

Let's say if I was a radical conservative and started treating Attlee or Wilson the same way, how would you react?
Sorry, a little off topic, but I've just realised I haven't seen 4GS about for a while. He is a big Thatcher fan, anybody know where he has got to?
Sorry again, In the recent posts box, 4GS popped up just after my post above and mentioned his absence. So all is revealed.
Sorry again, again. Just read the 4GS thread and it is an imposter. Anyone know where the real 4GS has got to?
They hate her because she proved their flawed idelogy wrong. The worst thing you can do to a lefty is disagree with them or prove them wrong.
