Are the Chinese right in their belief that the number 8 is lucky, since they chose to open their Olympics at 8.08pm on 8/08/08?
Or was Edmund Burke, the 18th century politician right, when he famously said 'superstition is the religion of feeble minds' ?

welll it dosnt mean lucky as such it just number 8 in cantonese (not sure about mandrine i assume its the same) means 'rich' as chinese loves money very much lol
thats why we all love number 8.
i assume everyone have their own lucky number,
its just like here where Number 7 is Lucky. any reason why?? x

From what I can understand of it (from my rather patchy Cantonese) it's a kind of Chinese pun.
2 and 8 in Hakka (pronounced hat-gar) dialect is ya and ba (get rich is "fa ba") I think it stems from there.
Of course my Cantonese is'nt brilliant and I've only ever dated Cantonese girls so I can't speak for the Manchu's etc. and there is another Cantonese dialect that counts slightly different cklah, clee, clam, cee (1.2.3.4) to sum up.
i don't know, but a bit of useless information for you all...

I've dated 3 Cantonese girls the first one was a snotty cow, the second one never really left the womb (still has'nt) and the third (who I'm with now) is clever and gutsy, mad as a box of frogs especially for Haagen daazs ice cream (so I suppose she's easily pleased) she makes a nice fish soup though
