Did GCHQ incepted Omagh bombers calls during bombing?

It is claimed intelligence chiefs at GCHQ - the British secret organisation which intercepts electronic communications - recorded the bombers' mobile phone calls on the day of the attack.

If this claim is true, then they have known all along who the bombers are. Yet the investigating police were never told and their enquiries have been thwarted at every turn.

Do you think the British Government turned a blind eye, to ensure that the peace process was not derailed?

If GCHQ have know who carried out the attacks, should the Government be prosecuted for perverting the course of justice?

There have been two lengthy and costly trials which did not result in a successful prosecution. Yet the Government may have known those who were responsible all along.

I too hate the Daily Mail for it's constant right wing bias, but let's give the paper it's due. It's chosen to print a story which might actually have some validity.

I'm not blaming the Government for the bombing. It is well established that Real IRA fanatics planted the bomb to scupper the peace process.

I asked if the claim is true that the perpetrators were being monitored before, during, and after the bombing, then their identities must be known. To continue to let the cowardly murders get away with it is criminal and I am surprised that you are happy with that.

From what I know, the equipment at GCHQ was programmed to record any conversations from that mobile which it did. However an MI5 collator would not have had access to the recording until the Monday morning at the earliest. That said, the RUC should have been made aware in order for valuable forensic evidence to be taken from the suspects.

Dude...the Omagh bombing was in 1998...when a leftie liberal government was in power (called 'Labour').

So this isn't a 'party line' question.

And we're not talking about who's guilty of the bombing, we're talking about a possible subsequent cover up.
