Numpties using Loose intead of Lose

I picked up an actual printed book in Borders at the weekend and even that had the mis-spelling of lose as loose in it. I couldn't believe it.
What is the world coming to? Thick w4nkers.

If never fails to amaze me how many people feel entitled to correct other peoples grammar and spelling yet "don't do" maths or science.

Jeremy Paxman's a great example - sneering at ignorance of 19th Century Prime Ministers shortly before stumbling over a bunch of questions on Physics or Biochemistry.

I'm sure you don't fall into that category Avatar I'm sure your algebra is spot on, but there are different types of thick w4nkers

bad spelling is a bit of a bug-bear with me, I have brought it up on this board & was mostly derided for it - however, even though bad spelling annoys me somewhat, I would not resort to calling those who mis-spell (!) "thick w4nkers." I think that's a bit excessive?!

Are you so brilliant and faultless at everything Avatar?
I hate bad spelling but will be the first to admit I am cr@p at maths. Am I a thick t0s5er because I failed my 'o' level maths?

Everyone makes mistakes & although you don't expect to find errors in books, one has to make allowances! ;o}

I was reading through one of my five year old Granddaughters library books last week & had to edit some of the print in it. This book was dog eared, so obviously read by many other children. Maybe their parent/s hadn't noticed the errors, or if they did, didn't feel the need to make the school aware or amend it - but I did.

I'm with jake on this, who gives a thrupney bit about the occasional dodgy grammer/spelling unless it's some sort of English language exam so what. I also think it's some how trendy to know bu66er all about science/maths etc and in fact wallow in it. Anyway avatar can you post the context just in case the book is right and it's you who's the J Arthur, thanks.

Well it is a bit shocking to find it in a book but sallabananas illustrates my point exactly.

No hesitation in admitting to failing 'o' level maths but picking up on people's spelling!

For shame!

I think perhaps every time someone corrects somebody else's spelling or grammar (outside arts and literature at any rate ) I'll chip in and ask them what the volume of a sphere is or what the 9th prime number is

You must admit Jake that we use words every day, in speech, reading and writing.

Most of us have been speaking since we were one year old.

Surely we should have a good grasp of the language by school leaving age?

people do make mistakes; but those who publish books shouldn't. They have plenty of time to check the writing before it goes to the bookshelves. They used to have editors and proofreaders to ensure it didn't happen. Now I believe they don't want to spend money on staff.

I used to work for the local paper round this area and it was a staff daily game to check the paper for spelling mistakes.

Less than about 5 or 6 was considered a good day!

I have noticed many examples here on AB (and other sites) where people use "loose" instead of "lose"

Another common one is "wandering" instead of "wondering" as in "I was wandering if anyone has a laptop for sale..."

The problem is us "old uns", who grew up learning how words should be spelt, lived in an era of letter writing and so on.

With the advent of the internet, text messages and the like language has been changed out of all recognition in the last few years.

But it still pains me when I add an append here on AB (or another site) and notice a spelling mistake AFTER I have pressed Submit.
