Why is this NCO still in the army? Shouldn't criminal charges be brought against him?

Well Imlook at it this way.
You go in the army and you have to be tough enough to take whats coming. Not just from the enemy but your own ranks. It's the same no matter what you are.
Even middle class white men can be targetted.
It's all part an parcel of the whole thing. Women have been through a lot worse than she has.
Lumpy jumpers was just one term used but there is a lot worse.
She went in openly admitting she was a lesbian so she should have expected problems. Gays have never been welcome in the forces. Except maybe the Navy and even then you don't brag about it.
I don't see why she's getting her knickers in a twist. If you can't take it then don't join.
It's hardly suprising her future prospects are bleak. Employers are going to see her as a trouble maker.

Two things perked up my attention there:
You go in the army and you have to be tough enough to take whats coming. Not just from the enemy but your own ranks.
Does this make it acceptable then? Is it equally true of the women who work for corporate banks and get lewd suggestions from their "six-figure salary" bosses? Because its what men do, women should accept it? I find that rather bizarre.
Also, if you have to be tough enough in the army to take whats coming, what is your view on the DM article, re: the casualties of war and compensation?

Why not? Why should they not be open about coming out? Are you saying that people should not enter the forces and be themselves? Why should she have to expect 'problems' and this treatment? Would you put up with sexual harassment in any and every environment?

Sorry whats that supposed to mean.
She went in to do a job reguardless of her sexual orientation. It's not just the army that has the problem you know. Straight men will see any lesbian as fair game. It's just how it is.
I'm looking at it from the point of view of all those ment that have been injured in the line o duty and some saddo like her come along and bleats cos she can't learn tto ignore the prat and she gets this much.
How do you think that makes the men and women who have been injured feel.
Your not telling me she didn't know she would be in the firering line when she joined. She choose to tell every one she was gay.
It shouldn't have mattered really but as I said it's the army and every one gets it there right from the bottom to the top.
I know I've lived around the army all my life.
Like I said if you can't take some verbal hassle then don't join.

Octavius I would learn to deal with it or give as good as I get but then I wouldn't go into such a profession without execting some sort of verbal trouble and thats al it seems to have been.
What about all those families of the men that died a Deepcut. That was a whole lot worse.
Some times It is amazing just how far this silly attitude of ' I'm gay and deserve better than every one else' has gone.
Isn't it time that every one just got on and did the job instead of buckling every time the going gets tough.
If she had been a police officer would you all ahve been so forgiving.
Probably not.

No. You go into the Army because you feel that you have something to offer it and it has something to offer you. Your expectations of comradeship and a fair and open workplace are exactly the same as if you were in civvy street.
Even middle class white men can be targetted.
There is NO excuse for bullying in the workplace.
It's all part an parcel of the whole thing. Women have been through a lot worse than she has.
But their employers have not always been called to account for neglecting to prevent this bullying. The fact that those women have been denied justice is not an excuse for NO woman to ever receive it.

Usually from public school lads who had only ever got close to Matrons chest.........
She went in openly admitting she was a lesbian so she should have expected problems.
Possibly to ward off the unwanted attention she would doubtless have received. You only have to reject one guy for him to call you a 'Lezzer' anyway.........
Gays have never been welcome in the forces. Except maybe the Navy and even then you don't brag about it.
Well, thank goodness things are changing........
I don't see why she's getting her knickers in a twist. If you can't take it then don't join.
She didn't sign up for daily unrelenting abuse from a superior officer.............
It's hardly suprising her future prospects are bleak. Employers are going to see her as a trouble maker.
And Ian Brown will go on his merry way when in actuality HE was the trouble-maker.

I agree with tigerlily11, 100% over this, it's tough in the forces, and as many say on this site, if you choose to take up this occupation, you take the rough with the smooth.
What did she have to endure a bit of rib-taking? No more really than a raw recruit has to suffer if their NCO takes a disliking to them.
30,000 in respect of "injury to feelings",
20,000 for "aggravated damages"
50,000 for "exemplary damages".
plus extras = 190,000
She wouldn't have been paid this much if she had had a limb blown of in a theatre of war.
It said she has been unsuccessful in her application to become an RSPCA inspector
So what you cannot expect to walk into any job just like that.
and she "considers her future employment prospects are bleak".
Welcome to the real world, there are thousands in the same boat, but not with 190,000 in the bank.

Forgiving of what? She is the victim here isnt she? I would expect that if anyone experienced similar treatment in the police force or any place really that they would be treated fairly and similarly depending on the circumstances.
If you are looking for people to stop, then perhaps these are the lessons that idiots like Ian Brown need in order for people to be treated with dignity and respect and for cultural change. Asking someone who is gay, or black, or even - God-forbid - Catholic to stop being who they are because it only invites trouble is rather counter productive isnt it.
