Where do people stand on this story?

I would especially like to hear from those who get angry at Muslims who refuse certain job tasks due to their religion.

Does this story make you feel equally angry, or do you feel that Relate could've done more to accommodate this worker:

First of all, neither situation makes me feel 'angry' in the slightest.

I think it is unfortunate when people allow themselves to be put in a position where their responsiblities conflict with their religious beliefs.

I feel passionately about smoking, and would not be willing to sell cigarettes and tobacco as part of my duties.

For that reason, I will never be able to apply for a job with any major supermarket chain - and i accept that.

It's not difficult is it?

It's really up to the employer.
If the employee is refusing to do part of the job you are paying them to do, for whatever reason, it's the employer's call on whether they are prepared to live with that or not.

It may be that they can accomodate the employee's wishes and come to some mutually acceptable arrangement - in which case great, everyone's happy.

On the other hand they just might not want to deal with having a different set of terms and conditions of employment for each individual, and I think that's fair enough as well.

I'd be interested to see whether the right wing press get up in arms about this the same way they did with that Muslim bloke employed by a supermarket who refused to handle alcohol.

If Muslims are so unhappy with alcohol, why do they sell it in their shops. They are notorious for selling to under-age.

The situation with the bloke employed by Relate is almost a mirror image though.

He'd been employed by them for years, and is now suing them basing his case on religious discrimination.
