There needs to be serious competition for iTunes. It is not healthy for one retailer to have such a dominant share of the market.

Not sure if this is it though.

There have been many attempts to steal the iTunes store's customers and there are many other download services, Besides competing on price, if they are to serious dent iTunes sales, they need to create a credible rival to the store.

Me too. I don't like downloading anything, unless its a digital ep or something otherwise unobtainable without some lush artwork and something I can hold in my hand. I downloaded a few albums way back when but only went and bought them because I liked them so much.
I welcome the competition, but to challenge iTunes, the new service will have to provide not only the music, but album cover artwork.

iTunes in the UK is hideously overpriced, but (and I hate to say this) the interface is superb. There is no other music provider to challenge it (for now).;

I think it's going to be a case of 'wait and see'.

Incidentally - most modern music is not worth more than 3 per album.

In my day you had quality music. Not the rubbish you hear in the charts nowadays (there...I've finally become my father).

In answer to the question you posted, as I understand it, the music will be 'DRM free' (no digital rights management) and I've been told by one of the techies I work with, that the format will be mp3 - meaning you should be able to play downloaded tracks on most mp3 players - not just iPods.
