With hundreds of detainees to be released shortly and their own country refusing to take them back should we help the US by allowing them the right to come to Britain?

If not where should they go?

They have not been charged with any atrocities and could eventually become good citizens. Work permits could be given although many will have take up benefits.

I don't think their own countries can refuse to take them back. In some cases they're scared to go, which is a different matter. In such cases they could apply for asylum, and may have a good argument for it, but it would be done on a case-by-case basis. But we shouldn't do it to 'help the US'; we've done quite enough of that already.
I think the generally accepted notion of justice is that if youhave evidence that somebody has commited a crime you prosecute them if you don't you let them go.

I guess the problem happens if you invade a country and arrest someone and then find their "crimes" were commited in a country over which you have no legal juristiction.

They could always do what we did lith Lord "Haw Haw" after the war. Who was an Irish citizen broadcasting from abroad.

We Ignored the fact that he wasn't British, pretended he was and executed him for Treason!

It's clear therefore that the US needs to immediately bestow US citizenship on Bin Laden and Co. and take it from there!

I like the idea of making them US citizens. It did enter my mind where they could be deported to if they got into trouble. That would supply the answer.
Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesman Edward Davey said: "It's right that Britain plays its part in helping President-elect Obama close Guantanamo Bay.

WHY ???????????

This is America's doing, why should we offer help?

America is large enough to absorb the 50 (if not all of the 250) detainees, Why should we shoulder the cost and responsibility for them?

In similar circumstances would America take some of our detainees?

I don't think so somehow.
