Barack Obama is a Christian
11 Answers
He believes in the Bible. How could such a misguided person have become the most powerful person in the World?
So, over to the Lefties. I concede that you are right in your anti-Christian indignation, but how come you never got to be elected President of the USA?

What is great is that American voters have ignored the fact that he's black, and a whispering campaign claiming he's a Muslim too.
But he's got a humungous task ahead of him. I wish him well, and you and all your compatriots too, Clanad.

Well, I think most of us here, Christian or otherwise, didn't get voted as president because either:
a) We didn't want to stand for election,
or
b) We're not American citizens, and so we couldn't have done.
And there's nothing intrinsically wrong with a Christian just as long he or she keeps their Christian ideals to themselves and doesn't try foisting them onto the rest of us.

I can see, I think, what the poster is saying. Obama is black, and a lot has been made of that, and does it matter - well yes it does!!
The other aspect is his Christianity. Interesting how to see he deals with fundamental Islam. He might have to send American soldiers to kill Muslims.
An interesting few years on the way, but I hope God is with him.

What has being a 'leftie' got to do with being a Christian or not? It's quite possible to be both. A great many of the old lefties in Britain ( a dying breed, if not all dead yet) were Christians. They tended to the view that socialism had the ideals of Christ and it was the capitalists who'd have the problem getting to Heaven ! All that stuff about God and Mammon and a camel and the eye of a needle ought to give millionaire capitalists a lot more to worry about!.
Which 'lefties' do you say have 'anti-Christian indignation'? And how does it manifest itself?

The interesting question is how America became so religious in comparison to western Europe. It's almost inconceivable now for an atheist to get elected there.
It wasn't always that way.
Washington almost never went to church, nor did Jefferson. Tom Paine was probably an athiest. Even Lincoln was not much of a church goer.
The phrase "under God" was added to "one Nation" in the oath of allegiance in the 50s so obviously it was well underway by then.
I'd guess it's related to the mass immigration waves but I'm not sure, there is evidence that religous belief can have a genetic component - perhaps that got concentrated as religious refugees fled to the US
