claiming ''unfair'' bank charges off your bank hang on in there,the judge has this morning upheld the ofts claim against the banks for ''unfair charges'' paving the way for thousands of claims....only the house of lords can save the banks now....if they decide to go that far....

As an ex bank employee I remember that most personal customers were better off before 'free banking' was introduced. Most branch managers would provide secondary services such as drafts free of charge 40 years ago - but once 'free' banking was introduced all such services had a standard charge applied to them. And most personal customers had their nominal charges waived anyway.
There were no charges for returning cheques.
Now we are likely to see a standard charge for operating an account and then additional charges for secondary services albeit lower than at present.
