Since Premier Foods took over the brand a few years ago, those packets of instant custard are hard to find in the UK.

If you read the article it tells you where she tried to buy it.

I have experienced no problems purchasing said item on a regular basis from the well known supermarkets inc Tesco .

Can't you make custard then?
Question Author
Yep - but the instant stuff is so convenient .

Anything for an easy life - dont you think ?
Well said Ethel, lets face it, real custard isn't hard to make,
Was the woman in France? She wouldn't find it over there the French don't believe that custard exists.

There's is no word in the French language for custard.

They call it 'English Cream', or crme anglaise.
What do you girls consider to be real custard? The original Birds powder was considered a convenience originally. Milk eggs and flour are what is needed.
Well, you can call me a girl if you wish sandmaster, not a problem, but for real custard, I have to say, you have it just about right, Birds is an imitation, nothing more.

Actually, Sandmaster, you don't need flour for a custard sauce. You need eggs, cream or milk and a little sugar. If you add flour you're making confectioner's custard, which is used as a filling for sweet tarts and the like. You CAN use a bit of flour if you're a scaredy cat and think that your custard might curdle, but it's hard to rid the custard of a slight yucky taste without boiling it if you do. Myself, I was taught to make it at cookery school without.
