I can't speak for Irish law, but in the UK no church has any legal power over us, no matter what it may say. The only power it holds over us is what we choose to let it.
Unfortunately church and education have been closely intertwined for so long they've become virtually inseparable. Our kids grow up fearful and guilt-ridden, forced to conform under threat of being cast out of society. They cannot know otherwise. Some are enlightened, but too many live their whole (often short) lives in the cage that is religion.
Separate state education completely from 'faith' and we may just be taking the first step to freedom.

"Are we helpless?" To do what?
Any "power of the Church" is what society has seen fit to tolerate over centuries, so any atrocities commited and/or condoned by Churches are what we've brought inadvertantly upon ourselves by our collective inability and failure to regulate and monitor their activities.
We only have ourselves to blame!

>Any "power of the Church" is what society has seen
>fit to tolerate over centuries,
Well over time the "church" has used fear, torture, burning at the stake and the like to supress any anti-church thoughts.
In fact considering religion is supposed to be about "peace and love" it is amazing how cruel the church and its followers have been over the years.
The Catholic church and the Mafia. They both came from Italy, but which of them has been responsible for more deaths and suffering?
