The Conservative leader used a discussion about his opposition to ID cards to do what appeared to be an impression of a Nazi officer.

Adopting an exaggerated German accent, he asked the crowd 'Where are your papers?'

But it drew gasps from listening voters at the question and answer session in Norwich, and did not quite yield the response he was going for.

Critics fear it could even trigger an embarrassing diplomatic row between the would-be Prime Minister and Germany.

Unfortunate but a diplomatic incident?

I think not - on the world stage it is difficult to compete with this:

Yes, I'd say it was a Gaffe, obviously trying to make a valid point but chose the wrong way to do it.
I doubt the twist and shouts will be bothered. I'm more worried about the advisors behind Cameron, they would have all discussed this and thought it was ok. Still not a patch on Berlusconi gaffes especially the one where he dissed Merkel by answering the phone when he was about to be greeted!
Dont see the problem myself. Seems a perfectly reasonable illustration.
I chuckled at this gaffe just as I chuckled at Brown's Obama/Omaha faux pas recently. It's called having a sense of humour.
Haha what a prat.
I think it was just a laugh really, goose stepping whilst saying it would have been a gaffe.

Some people are far too touchy. They should get a life!
David is ex Eton and is known for his wonderful sense of humour. I thought his act was quite spiffing.
Us ex public schoolboys enjoy a jolly jape now and again.

In the past Freddie Starr, John Cleese and others have impersonated the Nazis/Germans, all in the name of humour.

Due to political correctness and also being frightened to upset anyone, we are swiftly loosing our sense of humour.
