I love Wimbledon fortnight but not sure who I would like to win it, gone are the *stars* of the game, the entertainers like Illya Nastasi, Jimmy Connors, McEnroe and even ice-cool Borg, it used to be such a joy to watch, I think it would have to be Roger Federer for me, I am aware of a similar thread in CB but as I choose not to go in there now, I have posted in here, it is still News after all, and before my friends over the border, take umbridge, I'm sorry but I don't think Murray sells it to me!

Wouldn't it be great if a Brit won for a change?
I couldn't possibly care less about Wimbledon if I tried. Tennis, whilst a great game to play, is one of the most boring to watch.

Same goes for cricket - boring, boring, boring.

The only thing sporting wise that is keeping me going at the moment is the Lions tour - were it not for that, Summer sporting for me would be a pretty grim affair.
The stars of the past would not last to the second week. The bigger lightweight rackets, players built like weight lifters then playing two five set matches on succeeding days would blast them off the court. Murray has only done well because of his fitness regime above all else.
We're all wishing the plucky Brit Murray the best of luck.! Come on Andy - Do it for Britain!

(later that month...)

Oh dear, the dour Scot Murray has gone out in the second round.

I do wish him well and yes of cause I would like it if a Brit won, he would need some serious PR for me to get myself comfy to watch hime yho' and I agree with you rov entirely, but they were very entertaining to watch.Flip I don't go big on Rugy I'm afraid, I enjoy football and watch an England game if it's on, I used to look forward to my Newcastle's games,,,errrm, enough said there..lol, but I absolutley love Tennis, especially this fortnight, it's just so....English!
Has anyone noticed that the word 'plucky' only ever gets used during Wimbledon fortnight?

Good luck to Mr Murray. I won't be watching Wimbledon because like flip_flop I find tennis monumentally boring - but if he makes it through to the semis, I'll give it a watch.

I heard a comedy sketch which involved 4 British runners in some kind of race. The English commentator kept refering to the plucky British lads until they dropped out when it became 'oh dear, the Ulsterman has fallen, what a let down' or '..the welsh lad Williams has just given up - they'll be crying in the valleys tonight, but the British lad Jocky McPherson is still hanging on in there' etc etc.

Quite funny I thought.
It would be good if AM won..........................I have not watched it for years it is all big serve none of them have entertainment value of Nastasi McEnroe & co.
What is all this 'Brit' talk ? I find it most offensive, please use the proper name 'British' after all other nationalities enjoy the right of the full name of their country being used.
'the British' is a plural, or an adjective, oldgit. I suppose technically the singular is 'a Briton', but that sounds rather antique, don't you think? You could say he is British but if you want to say he a something, 'a Brit' is about all you can use.
he IS a something... and British, not the British, is an adjective... apologies for my lazy typing, oldgit.
Alternatively you could say he is a Scot or he is Scottish abd avoid the problem entirely ;o)
AOG - You would find a Vicars tea party offensive .
