Is this article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8225 621.stmA US woman found after being abducted as a girl in 1991 gave birth to two children fathered by her alleged kidnapper - the first when she was 14. Jaycee Dugard and her daughters, 11 and 15, were kept in a "hidden backyard within a backyard", police say. Alleged kidnapper Phillip Garrido, 58, and his wife Nancy Garrido, 54, are being held in custody in California. DNA tests are being done to establish Ms Dugard's identity, but meanwhile she has been reunited with her mother.
Just been listening to a child protection officer on GMTV though and he pointed out that age was a major factor in these cases, meaning that it was much easier to reason and control an 11 year old (do as I say or I'll kill your parents) than a 4 yr old!
Glad she's been found bur what an ordeal for her and her family especially her two young daughters. Hopefully they can go on to have some kind of normal life. Good luck to them all!
This case has a strong resemblence to the Austrian one where the daughter was locked away. In that case there was some complicity revealed when she felt some sympathy and understanding when he killed himself.
Likewise in this latest case you have to wonder what complicity there was to enable it to carry on for such a long time. You can understand the initially fear and loathing but can the mind be altered and brainwashed to accept the vile conditions?
Another case that comes to mind was the Pattie Hurst, a multi-millionairres daughter, an almost ficticious story in the US where she was imprisoned and brainwashed but eventually became a bank robber armed with a machine gun. Who's to say if acceptance of the situation is just a form of self preservation.
