This little boy died needlessly.

The family said through a policeman that no-one was to blame. Has the mother not heard of child reins then? I am a mother of 3 and a grandmother of 3 so I am fully aware that chidlren of this age need constant adult supervision.

This neglect is part of what is wrong with the UK today....everyone knows their rights, but can't quite remember their responsibilities.

well said sallabananas it wold appear i.don no lives in a perfect little world here....or maybe the rose tinted glasses are too tinted to see through....from what she is saying you would think that her kids/grandchildren have never, ever, ever had a scrape, fallen off a bike, fell over,or even grazed their knees...they really must have been wrapped up in cotton wool....well done dear....
How did she ever manage to make her kids dinner while never taking an eye off of them. Must have been difficult...!!!
And I.Don No do you actually think that there was a time when children didn't
die in accidents through the neglect of their parents?

Because your comments how this is "part of what is wrong with the UK today"
make it rather sound as if you do

Which is why I accuse you of rose tinted spectacles

One might even say sanctimonious

ummm....when you fell that could not be helped but if your child had not only been holding your hand but had also been connected to you by, say, the wrist strap type of restraint then you would have had one less thing to worry about.

'A little boy fascinated by trains perhaps/ A mother's momentary lapse in concentration? '

IMHO in a moment of lapse of concentration a tug on the reins from a child trying to run off would concentrate my mind completely.

I have not posted the original post in order to upset anyone...quite the reverse.....I did it in order to make people think, and if only 1parent who reads my posts and buys child reins then I will be very happy.

Of course it is a tragic loss and I am sure the parents will beat themselves up about it for the rest of their lives, and so they should. this could have so easily been prevented.

And as for a previous poster trying to find someone else of something else to blame....well, it just saddens me. OK so the gate may not be able to be locked but even if it had someone may have left it unlocked, hence the overwhelming need for adults to have the young children restrained in some way.

When my children were small if they were not in their buggy then they were held by me by the hand and reins.

It is not rocket science, just common sense.

a posting above mentions that some children have always been mis-handled in the past and things have gone wrong. Therefore there is no excuse for not doing all we can to stop children dying in this tragic way. I, for one, am really upset when I see a family walking along the street and one or more of the toddlers are way in front or way behind the adults. How can they not know that this is dangerous?

I am not perfect and as a parent I made mistakes. Therefore I speak from my own experience of child rearing. But all my children grew up to be adults and I w
exactly how did they foresee it!! If they had they would have stopped it.
Doubtlessly had this mother not tragically lost her child in this accident she would also
In 20 years time be boasting of how she raised childred sucessfully with the careful
application of common sense.

It's the great thing abut common sense it's just so obvious in hindsight isn't it?

Just to put the record straight.....

I do not live in a perfect world

Of course my children scraped their knees, etc, reins are a restraint, not a prison.

4getmenot...there was a railway line along which travel high speed trains, what is not to foresee??!!

jake the peg....I am not boasting, I am simlpy stating that some hazardous situations are completely obvious and can therefore be avoided.

some of the comments made in some of the posts in this thread are filled with sarcasm towards my comments. I cannot comprehend how the fact that I successfully raised 3 children using my common sense is somehow something to be ashamed of.
dont bring it on this thread army. It is a traggic accident, no one can keep an eye on their children 100% of the time. and anyone that knows gypsy families know they are too trusting

So are you saying that they foresaw it?? Are you saying your 3 children have never fallen over, never drawn on things they should have, never eaten something they shouldnt. Well done you!!!
My query has still not been answered, why don't you see children on reins any more?
In the report I read,it mentioned she had a 4 year with her as well as the 2 year old.

When my children were small I would hold their hands when out walking but if A fell, I would have to let go of B's hand to help the other up. It would only be for a second or two but long enough for a small child to make a dash for it. Does this make me a bad parent? Would it be better if I had jerked A back onto her feet using one hand?

It's more than possible that the other child distracted the mother. This was not wilful neglect, as in the case mentioned by Legend, and this woman will torture herself enough without people like you judging her.

sqad

because some people dont value thier children as much as they should.

Idon...quite.

The example that I gave, seemed to have summed it up........they blame ME and I got an ear wigging from them...LOL

Where do you go from there?
So what do you do if your child will not wear reins and you have to drag them the street kicking and screaming?
This is not a high speed line. It is a branch line. There are only 6 or 7 trains a day.A few more minutes and this would never have happened. It is set in the middle of fields. The road running up to it is an old single track lane with no traffic access on one side. On the other side, where the boy came from it is access only to 3 or 4 houses and the travellers site which is a small family site with a bungalow and a couple of vans on it.
I would imagine his mother to a point felt her son was perfectly safe. As would most other families who walk down there. As I said earlier, this was a tragic end to an unfortunate set of events. If we start to attack every parent whos child gets hurt whilst out of their sight then my god what a world we would live in.
