The French have time limits for prosecutions. That explains why one of their recent presidents was not prosecuted for unlawfully diverting public funds to his personal benefit. Initially he had the protection of being President and by the time he wasn't the prosecution was out of time under French law. Given that atitude, it's understandable that their minister was upset at this treatment of a French citizen, even a convicted one.

Ankou - it has taken so long because Polanski has been careful to avoid travelling to any countries with an extradition agreement with the U.S. - with the eception of Switzerland.
Polanski has visited Switzerland several times after assurances from their government that he will not be arrested and extradited while in their country.
They lied.

"One night stand"??????????????????
This girl was drugged and sodomised at the age of THIRTEEN - how does that become a 'one night stand'?
You should be ashamed of yourself.
Child abuse is still a crime - the passage of time does not make it something else more palatable to mean Polanski can simply shrug it off.

When I originally heard about this (happened before I was born) I admit I thought, here we go, a very mature 13 year old 'child', wanting some attention, fame and fortune, probably promiscuous and into drugs, crying rape because it didn't go her way or she let him take advantage then realised she didn't like it. Since then I've read more into it, particularly the court transcripts. No, she wasn't some completely naive, innocent child and it's hard to imagine during the event why she reacted in the way that she did (I hope I never end up in that situation to realise why) - but what he did was appalling, he effectively groomed her and used his status to exert his power over her, and she did not think she had a choice to get away from him.
It is staggering that this was not dealt with earlier and throughout he has been so high profile, clearly unconcerned with what he has done. And I wonder how many times he had done this before. I understand the girl wants this to just go away - he has just prolonged this spotlight for her, by not facing up to what he did and accepting punishment. He could have served his time and been a free man by now.
