Would anyone give the Conservatives a little more credit if they didn't just decry or mock everything the government proposes the minute it has come out of their mouths?

I realise that they have got to be an effective opposition but if they agreed with some Labour policies or views then I would give their views on the ones they didn't agree with a much harder listen, but at the moment I don't really take much stock in anything they say as they just have a negative comment to make about anything the government does.  I mean, I cannot imagine that they, or the general public, wholeheartedly disagree with everything that Labour do.

Howard did say, when he became leader just over a year ago, that there would now be an end to "yah-boo politics" and that when the Government proposed something the Conservatives agreed with, they'd support it.

Sadly - like most Tory promises - no such thing happened. He even tried to worm out from under his support for the war in Iraq in the most pathetic of ways.

Another example from many...his party had said earlier that they were considering university top-up fees, but - when these came onto Parliament's agenda - they were the worst thing since unsliced bread.

Need I go on? You're absolutely right, II_, their mockery of everything makes fools of them, not their opponents.

New Labour = Thatcherite Tory.  So, in theory, they must agree with their policies, but they won't admit to it (Labour won't admit swinging right to get the votes, and Tories won't admit to Labour preaching Tory policy).  At the end of the day, parliament is just a playground for big kids with big responsibilities to make big promises and make big **** ups.  They're all the same.  Lib Dem, Tory or Labour, they'll all lie through their teeth, abuse their positions and bicker like school kids.  Disenchanted with democracy in this country?  I guess I am.

In defense of the Tories though (didn't think I'd ever say that), weren't Labour exactly the same when they were in opposition? And pretty much every opposition before that?

That's politics for you, and one of the main reasons why people get so disillusioned and hence apathetic about it. Funnily enough, the only thing the Tories have supported was to go to war in Iraq which, to my mind, is - by a distance - the worst decision this government has made.
It's par for the course I am afraid. I think it's more how they do things than necessarily what they do.  Opposition have very little to work with and have to try to second guess the Gov, which usually ends in failure.  As for the decision to go to war, well that's for another thread.  One point i will make is that Red or Blue will be a far far far safer bet that yellow.

Having lived through many long years of Conservative rule, there is nothing they can do or say that will get me to vote for them. However bad New Labour gets, Conservatives will be much worse.

I vote against Conservative. That means voting for Labour in national elections and for Liberal in local elections.

I would give the Conservative Party a bit more credit if it abandoned its support for membership of the European Union.  As long as the UK in in the EU, it will be the over-riding element which influences and restrict so much of what the UK government and parliament will be able to do anyway.
It's what opposition parties do.  Personally, I think ALL politicians are liars and I am so disillusioned with them all that I will never vote again - I am virtually disenfranchised!

I agee with Pinotage wholeheartedly.

Nice to see intelligent arguments for New Labour. Well done Pinotage! We have the government we deserve.
You can't think very much of yourself then BenDToy ;o)  Just kidding!  As I said, all parties are as bad as each other.
