It seems that banks are going to discuss the phasing out of cheques. I pretty well have myself already but I do occasionally have to write one when the recipient is from the stone age. Anyway will this be a giant leap for mankind and if so, in what direction?

I take it you don't have school age kids Geezer

Most cheques I write seem to be for them

Still I think they're talking about 2018 so there should be plenty of time for them to get themselves organised
I actually send around 3-5 cheques a month - indeed I wrote one this morning. This one is for a Rotary dinner that I am going to on Monday night, It is pay on the door and is much easier for all concerned if a cheque is presented. Easier as the cost is £44 for the two of us - so no messing about with change (as most people if paying cash would come in with £50). Easier that of the 100 people attending, noone will have to walk out with a couple of thousand pounds in cash on them. Easier in that to arrange a bank transfer, I would have to login and have all those hassles, AND the treasurer would have to go through and track the payments from individuals.

I have just collected sponsorship for a charity. Much easier for me to collect it all and then send my cheque together with a couple of other cheques that people have given me to the charity rather than phone them up, get their bank details etc etc.

I agree that there is no real need for a cheque for normal shopping etc, but if cheques are stopped it is the local clubs and charities that I think will be most effected.
I would welcome it. I get paid by cheque and its a right pain having to get to the bank within opening hours and then wait for them to clear.
Barmaid - I think that there is no excuse for employers to pay by cheque - and I have no issue if this was made a legal requirement - but I don;t think the answer is to ban cheques.
We have a window cleaner that comes around every couple of months. As we're out at work he leaves and invoice and we send a cheque.

There are some instances whereby cheques are still useful.

Spot on Jake, the school is the only place I have had to write cheques in the last year. I did ask for the account details so I could do a tranfer but they seem to prefer cheques.
I always found that cheques are easier to book-keep. You are more ahead of your accounts with cheques.
Work cheques should clear straight away barmaid.
I have several friends that are self-employed tradesmen. They are paid almost exclusively by cheque. What will happen in their cases?

debit card? direct transfer?
Time for your friends to move in to the 21st century haggis.
When the money from my house came through I had two options. Transfer, which the charged me for or cheque which was free. I opted for the cheque...
I write quite a few cheques, to pay my milkman, to send to school, to pay my credit card bill and to pay my hairdresser, not to mention sending money for birthday presents by cheque.
I'm all for online banking but cheques are still useful. I have tradesmen who come to the door, I don't have cash in the house and I'd be buggered if i'm going to give them my bank card details as I don't really know them from Adam. A cheque is much easier.

Also birthdays, its better to send a cheque than cash and you have to pay for postal orders, seems slightly cold to tell somebody that you'll wire them their birthday money.

Daft thing is, is that if I try to pay one of my credit cards (nationwide) at the local branch with cash they actually raise a cheque.

your bank card details are on every cheque!
card details arent.

Account details are, but not bank card details
lol. Check the numbers at the bottom of your cheque. Your account number is there for all to see.
Will bank charges reduce with less printing costs - I think not.
card details arent.

Account details are, but not bank card details
I wouldn't have thought so as hardly anyone uses cheques now.
