Time to Cheque out
It seems that banks are going to discuss the phasing out of cheques. I pretty well have myself already but I do occasionally have to write one when the recipient is from the stone age. Anyway will this be a giant leap for mankind and if so, in what direction?

This one is for a Rotary dinner that I am going to on Monday night, It is pay on the door and is much easier for all concerned if a cheque is presented. Easier as the cost is £44 for the two of us - so no messing about with change (as most people if paying cash would come in with £50). Easier that of the 100 people attending, noone will have to walk out with a couple of thousand pounds in cash on them. Easier in that to arrange a bank transfer, I would have to login and have all those hassles, AND the treasurer would have to go through and track the payments from individuals.
I have just collected sponsorship for a charity. Much easier for me to collect it all and then send my cheque together with a couple of other cheques that people have given me to the charity rather than phone them up, get their bank details etc etc.
I agree that there is no real need for a cheque for normal shopping etc, but if cheques are stopped it is the local clubs and charities that I think will be most effected.

I'm all for online banking but cheques are still useful. I have tradesmen who come to the door, I don't have cash in the house and I'd be buggered if i'm going to give them my bank card details as I don't really know them from Adam. A cheque is much easier.
Also birthdays, its better to send a cheque than cash and you have to pay for postal orders, seems slightly cold to tell somebody that you'll wire them their birthday money.
Daft thing is, is that if I try to pay one of my credit cards (nationwide) at the local branch with cash they actually raise a cheque.
