We've said a fond farewell to some of our favourite celebs (Michael Jackson, Jade Goody, Steven Gately)...

We witnessed the miraculous... (the landing on the Hudson River)

We've had heavy hearts when we've lost good men in Afghanistan.

What was YOUR main news story of 2009?

For me... The reappearance of missing Jacey Lee Duggard. It gave hope to so many.

MPs and their expenses. Didn't give me much hope at all, unfortunately.

Celebrity?
I think the one which made the biggest impression on me was the attitude of the widow of Olaf Schmid who was killed in Afghanistan.
There was no weeping and wailing, just a quiet pride in her husband......and you could tell that she'd dressed just for him on the day of his funeral and s0d what anyone else thought......inspiring.

Yes, Craft. She was very dignified and did her husband proud.

Ahms... Yes, it would be hard to replicate such depravity.

Kate and Gerry McCaan saying they will set the table at Christmas with a space for Maddie.....

Shame they didn`t feel the same need to eat with her whilst on holiday
Hearing that Sarah Payne's poor Mother Sara was in hospital over Christmas due to brian surgery complications, really saddened me.

This poor woman has been thro' so much & has worked so hard campaigning to keep children safe from the type of monster who murdered her little girl.

I wish her well & hope she will soon be back home with her children & the rest of her family.

Elvis... whatever you feelings about the McCanns.... let's just hope the Madeleine is still alive and that she will one day be found.

Smudge... yes, I too was saddened to hear about Ms. Payne. She is an inspirational woman.
For me it was the dramatic fall from grace from the world's top squeaky clean sportsman.

No wonder he guarded his privacy so vehemently, he makes Casanova look like a choirboy!

Even Fortress Woods had a Prince Philip in its armour - the lure of a woman!
PMSL...is a Prince Philip a c hink
What The Funicular is a Prince Philip? I used the word ch!nk which is part of a well-worn phrase. AB auto sensor is far too strict!!

There were merely examples, Lucy... no need to get on your high horse...

I agree with you about one of them, but despite how you or I feel about the aforementioned "celebs" they were feted and lionised, and adored by the masses. And they all died untimely deaths. But not one single celebrity's untimely passing would ever be my top news story of the year.
so many really yes baby p,jedward. the paycuts here in ireland and the economic recession.

Probably the most significant was the Catholic sex abuse in Ireland. An ex mayor of Limerick never spoke about his abuse until he was in the audience of Prime Time. That appearance of his will remain in my mind for a while to come . ?Now he is applauded everywhere, He is a man of Courage

clerical abuse
You are absolutely right there pinktwink.

A man to be admired for speaking out, not only for himself, but the many other children who were abused at the hands of the so called 'good holy' people.
