Radiation from Security Whole Body Scanners - are they safe?

In the helter skelter race to install Whole Body Scanners, are the authorities happy that the resulting exposure to radiation is safe or will we get a whole range of lawsuits from people claiming they contracted cancer due to multiple scans? This guy thinks it is a possibility - from a science point of view:

I don't know about that but there was a report that one of these scans is less than 1/500 of a normal body scan through the tissues.

Whether they will work is doubtful. I assume it will pick up a tampon but what could be impregnated into it?
Androcles.......interesting, but it would be difficult to prove causation.
