Hardline Islamist Group To Be Banned

The radical islamist group that sparked outrage with its proposed march through the Wiltshire town of Wootton Bassett is to be outlawed.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson will use anti-terror powers to proscribe the organisation Al Muhajiroun and its latest offshoot Islam4UK.

The move means it will be a criminal offence to become a member of these groups, or to attend or address any meetings in their name.........................................

This is not from the Daily Mail as has become a chant on here from the regular "Newsies" but breaking News this morning on Sky, at last something is being done about this motley crew who are in favour of Sharia Law being used in this country, he's banned such organisations and their "spin offs" Now I am pleased this has happed, you can call me racist for it as certain ones do, I am not, but I do feel common sense has prevailed...at least till the next show of utter contempt for the hand (benefits) that feed them !

Another misuse of Terrorism Laws.

The venue for their protest march was provocative and they deserve they backlash that it has brought, but their aim was to protest against the war and the deaths of Afghanistanis. They achieved the publicity for their cause without having the march, and they called it off.

They have now to been proscribed (as a terrorist organisation). The order will come into effect on Thursday and make it a criminal offence to be a member, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. The ban is an extension of an existing order made under the Terrorism Act 2000 that bans the group under the name Al Ghurabaa and The Saved Sect.

So, if you protest (or don't protest but say you will) about the senseless loss of life in some far off land where we shouldn't even be, the Government will send you to prison for 10 years. Stalin would be proud of Johnson and Co.

I am with you on this Bobbisox ! However I would deport the lot of them so that they cannot scrounge off the Benefit System which is probably one of the reasons they are here in the first place.
Send them to Afghanistan and hopefully the Americans can drop a few Bombs on them to wipe them out.

forgive my lack of understanding you Gromit, but shouldn't they therefore be protesting about sending British troops to fight a war in a far off land, as they are British Muslims??? I would of thought their protest about the war should not only lie with fellow Muslims but with the young men and women who have came home in a wooden box too...unless of cause, they are nor British Muslims in which case, deport them back to Yemen?, Jordan? Pakistan? see if they can pour scorn on that particular Government !!!

I agree. I'm glad they will be banned under counter-terrorism laws. The group has terrorism links and this is a fight against terrorism and recruitement not free speech.

That Choudary is quite a comedian - he said he might join the Labour Party and have them banned.

I'm really glad as well that British Muslims have spoken out against the group and shown condemnation of their practices.

Under the Terrorism Act 2000, a group can be banned if it "commits or participates in acts of terrorism, prepares for, promotes or encourages terrorism or is otherwise concerned in terrorism".

Groups can also be outlawed if they "unlawfully glorify the commission or preparation of acts of terrorism".

I think Alan Johnson needs to show what involvement they have had in this.

It would be a bad day for Britain if we have banned a group because they have simply outraged public sensibilities.

Much as I dislike them that would rather pave the way for Proscribing the BNP and then who next?

Ah, at last, the penny has dropped with the Labour governmrnt.

They have finally taken the correct steps in proscribing such groups and taking a stance against UK based Islamic terrorism. I've never voted in my life, nor will I but I'm fairly sure a Conservative goverment would have taken these (hardly draconian by any stretch of the imagination) steps several years ago.

We ought to have a little more of the current French mindset in such matters.

You shouldn't be allowed to stage a protest if it's not in line with current Government policy.

The problem I see with this , would be a mass recruitment of young Muslims who are prepared to stand against the British Government.
I think we all would like to see our troops sent home instead of fighting this futile war, but they are there and we should be supporting them for doing their job, not screaming abuse at them when they come home, these were alive in Luton, the other soldiers were not should the march through WB had gone ahead, can anyone honestly tell me that these people show respect for Britain and everything British? And what about their clear wish for Sharia Law to be introduced into Britain?

It flies in the face of traditional British politics. Should they not be allowed to argue for it?

Not showing respect for the UK law is not grounds for proscription

Nor is campaigning for Sharia law

The law requires that they be involved in terrorism - just being a bunch of deeply unpopular people at election time is not.

If you play fast and loose with the law with these people you may find yourself at the wrong end of it at a later time.

We need to see that terrorism link spelled out - Carrying empty coffins through Wotton Basset is not terrorism

I can't see what terrorism they've been involved in. Doubtless the government will say they have to withhold this information - for counter-terrorist reasons.

In other words, 'Trust me - I'm a politician.'

jtp, I would imagine they, being Government lawyers, have scrutinised the law before taking this action, otherwise they, the Muslim4UK group, would take it to the high court?

It would not be the first time that anti Terror Laws have been misused.

Trainspotters have been arrested, Councils use it to catch parents trying to get into the better schools, and the Labour Party have used it to eject an 82 year old man from their Conference.
