Last once again, should we now consider pulling out of the European Song Contest?

We are either no good at composing the right type of music, no good at selecting an artist, or no good with the final presentation.

But I don't believe any of these, I just think the rest of Europe just doesn't like us.

So pull out of the contest now, in fact pull out of the Community altogether.

We put very little effort into this contest, picking useless unknowns to perform it, and for several years, very very poor songs. The music and arrangements we have produced are amateurish at best.

I wonder what would happen if the Great British entry was actually that and not a half hearted English entry. Something from that proud singing county of Wales preferably sung in Welsh Gaelic, and good to look at like a present day Dana or Mary Hopkins. We couldn't do any worse, we should try it next year.

Can`t believe a nation such as the Uk that has produced such fantastic music over decades has anything to do with such rubbish as Eurovision. Apart from the fact that the music is crap, the voting is all political and I believe we are one of the nations that actually funds other countries to vote against us and for their pals

I'm with you on Eurovision. I think any songwriter who goes for it these days is fully aware that the number of votes is dependent on country rather than quality of song, and so they just submit the cheesiest rubbish they can come up with. In short, they've just stopped trying.

I also used to say 'let's pull out of Europe altogether', but there are aspects of being European that I've come to like. There is a whole world of experience across the channel that we now have free and easy access to with minimum hassle thanks to the EU.

It's interesting that people in other European countries are as much opposed to Euro-Domination as we are - many didn't want the Euro, for instance, and I know they certainly don't welcome illegal immigrants any more than we do. If you look beyond your prejudice, AOG, you'll see we have more in common with mainland Europeans than we have differences. Two or more countries lobbying their governments for the same thing has to be far more effective than one country trying to go it alone because they have some long-standing gripe against the other.

Gromit, I believe that thanks to a wonky R key you alleged that Wales was a county. But yes, the notion of regionally inspired music is an interesting one. Our songs seem to be mostly europap - and this goes at least back to Boom Bang-a-Bang - and there's no reason why they should be; British contemporary popular music has been second to none for the last half century, but we seem not to play to our strengths.

Our position is a reflection of the song more than anything.
Pete Waterman is yesterday's news, why don't we just ask groups to enter, we could do worse than use the format for Channel 4's "Unsigned Act" series which had some excellent groups.

Josh badly missed the top note that ended his song, leaving a bad last impression. I think the songs should all be specially composed for the show. That German girl was a cert to win, All the panels knew the song as it was a big hit in Europe. However, I think Cheryl singing Fight for this Love would have swept the board.
